Gear Ratio - Am I Nuts

Working on a 1993 XJ I picked up and have been slowly 'restoring'. From the factory it's a 3.07 ratio. While replacing the bearings and seals on the front axle (Dana 30) I counted the ring and pinion teeth and got a 3.55 ratio. I was pleasantly surprised since I wanted to regear to at least 3.55 or 3.73 for better drivability (I don't do a ton of off roading). Finally started working the rear axle and when I popped the cover saw "3 0 7" stamped on the ring gear. Counted the teeth and sure enough it's a 3.07 ratio. Double checked the front axle (since it's buttoned up) by rotating the hub and counting the yoke and it's definitely at 3.55. Is there something I'm missing here - pretty positive you can't run 4WD with mismatched gear ratios....

Unless you run different sized tires front to rear...

Sounds like someone mixed and matched some parts.

It should not be hard to come up with another 3.55 rear.

You are correct, avoid 4wd unless absolutely necessary until you are able to get the gears matched.

Or run 35s in the front and 31s in the rear….

Had that happen to me. Years ago I purchased an 87Cherokee Chief just for the D44 in it,A 5spd it was a 3.07 ratio.Pulled axle out and left it parked. Then son wanted to get it running,Made a purchase from Mike in NJ. and got what I thought and he thought was a D35/3.07. It took a while to put things together and XJ still wasnt run except to move around in the yard. After several months got a call from Mike,he asked about the rear, seeme he had several and sold another as a 3.55 to some one else. It was the 3.07. We had a laugh, I pulled the rear and we met halfway between Va and NJ to swap again. Those were good times.
