Mythbusters/airplane on a treadmill.

Unfortunately I read about the first 12 pages of this before I decided to post. I know for a fact the plane will fly.... no i have never seen the experiment played out...... I have no experience with aeronautics....... i have little experience in physics..... However, I do have ALOT of common sense, and the plane will fly. I will bet whatever sum of money, anyone would like to bet me, and will not feel guilty taking it from you when the plane flies. I cannot fathom why everyone here seems to believe that the treadmill has a single thing to do with the plane flying or not flying. Feel free to post up whatever sum of money you would like to bet me, and I gladly accept all bets in advance in case I do not check the thread again before the plane flies off the treadmill (because the treadmill doesn't effin matter to begin with).

damn..... when did it air? I meant to watch it. I knew the answer to this even the first time I read the scenario on the net several years ago.

Yes Billy I know.. Let me get the 75 outa this kid at school and I'll shoot you $25 for good measure.. lol

Yeah, got it on my ipod as well, love that show.

Billy :D

Damnit, that reminds me... need to get a check in the mail this week.

Thats where I had misunderstood the Myth though... I though they were going to place it facing the other way... like... when you run on a treadmill.. you run upstream... thats just dragging a damn airplane on a tarp... no shit its gonna take off..

this whole thing is soooo stupid

I didn't read through the thread and I actually didn't catch the episode on tv but i did just watch the link posted and they totally defeated the whole purpose of the myth.

Once the plane moves forward on teh conveyor it is not proving its own lift by moving forward thus pushing air under its wing.

the point of the myth was that with the conveyor moving backwords and the plane with enough prop speed to match the speed going forward of the conveyor that the plane would not take off.

All they did was provided a conveyor and then had the guy in the airplane throttle faster than the conveyor was moving thus providing forward movement and then giving lift.

Bahhh I can't believe this thread has this many pages for this stupid myth lol
