So a 30 spline zip and 30 spline shafts are the exact same price. Any more input on this?

If you do break, 3wd is going to be your only choice unless u buy 2 sets. How is the warrantee on those 30splines? Because if u break your going to want them to warrantee it

Your opinion seems to be based on other people's experiences/opinions.

My opinion is based on my own experiences with these products.

If yukon isn't a knock off company, then why haven't they designed thier own style of locker instead of "improving" other's designs?

But, this isn't the place for this discussion. Let's talk about how Kevin actually wheels his rig and what to do about HIS breakage issues.

seriously man my axles are literally stuffed full of Yukon parts through and through. love it. not saying ARB is bad, I don't have to run one to know that it would work great. I'd rather just go Yukon at this stage in the game. also not sure how a break test video is a matter of opinion...

as far as being knock off, define knock off. a company that improves off of age old designs to keep up with the current market is exactly the sort of thing I like to see, don't you? detroits fail all the time when someone breaks an axle, grizzly doesn't

The Yukon Grizzly Locker is similar to a Detroit Locker but features new patent pending design improvements. Yukon Grizzly Lockers feature a forged case and forged 8620 internals for greater strength. The internals feature inner clutch teeth with a larger radius, making them over 350% stronger than back-cut designs. These larger teeth help to avoid breakage against shock-loading or in the event an axle breaks. All Yukon Gear & Axle Grizzly Lockers are assembled in the USA and their internals are hand-fitted for faster re-engagement. Yukon Grizzly Lockers are perfect for drag racing, circle track & dirt racing, extreme off-road and heavy-duty towing.

sorry for cluttering up the thread kev. If a mod could move this mess to its own separate thread that would be choice.

I've already posted it twice on this thread, stay 27 spline.
Go aftermarket shafts with a good warranty, brand new 760s, full circle clips.
full case locker.

I don't care what brand you choose.

I will be ordering a grizzly or a detroit for my dana 60 front to replace my spool up front. I loved my grizzly in my 30, and I've loved the 5 detroits I've ran in different rear ends, the 2 14b, 1 hi9, 2 dana 44s.

Thanks for the input and tech, guys. I'm set on a zip locker though. ARB is pretty much out of the question at this point.

Whats the warrantee like on the zip? Because ARB did a test of theirs vs the zip, and the ARB won. Now granted this is not third party testing, so yes there is some bias to this test, but never the less its a solid video to watch: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dyzyAVPTM8c

Also a video of the zip not breaking at all, but 5 chromos breaking: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rbOkSirHYFg

I would say if the warrantee is on point, go with the zip!!

6 year warranty. 2 years of which they will cover up to $2000 in collateral damage caused by the carrier breaking. If it breaks.

Thoughts on Yukon chromo shafts? Lifetime waranty and fair price - similar to ten factory.

That first video is from 2009. Not standing up for yukon even though i think they are a decent option. However i dont think that test is valid anymore. Both companies have done redesigns since then.

Back to shafts

I would deffinately stay 27. Carry a set of stock spares as a just in case. But i bet in a few trips you will stop bringing them. MrEd didnt bring spares in wilbur. Chromos front and rear. Aussie locker front and detroit rear. The turning radius sucks with the auto in the rear.

Auto front, selectable rear i believe is the best budget minded setup. I loved my turning radius when i had the open rear lockrite front. Now it sucks with the spool.

Another vote for staying 27 spline. Easy to find spares. And personally I'd go with ARB over Yukon. I just went with an ARB in the rear of my ride, ditched the Detroit. Selectable front and rear is where it's at.

That is a #yoloswag420blazeit warrantee!

One thing I don't like about my Detroit in the front is when I'm in love trying to turn the wheel sharp it doesn't want to move half the time and is all bound up

sounds like a personal problem to me!

I saw some really faulty stuff with the Yukon 44 shafts lately. I'd poke around google to see if they're better with D30's. 10 factory is definitively better at making axle shafts

yep. a fair test would've been testing an early model ARB against that zip locker prototype. a rematch is in order now that Yukon has it down, but ARB never got back around to making a new video. it would probably be too expensive a test to find out which locker breaks first

Ask Tim burns... 30 spline arb and shafts still break lol

Go with 27 ten factory's . Their quality is far better than the alloy usa I had .. Which are now "omixada"

Can't comment on a locker as you know my 30 has liked to explode this year too. But I'd like to go full case. But as I see it I think my next option will be bigger axles. And probably not on this rig.

I have had dana 30 zip locker 27 spline for the last 2 seasons in my rig with no issues. I went from dana 44 trakloc to rear zip locker in rear for the last year, no issues at all. Love being able to turn them on whem I need them.

Sounds like the zip is the way to go if your ballin on a budget! That will be on my upgrade list....as well as a regear and chromos....
Ill only upgrade if i can find a tree that money grows on though

Welp, I just purchased a 27 spline zip locker through Daves Offroad Supply. He worked with me on the price and I got it for dirt cheap with a free compressor! Holding off on axle shafts until I decide for sure. Chances are it'll be ten factory. Just need to find the right vendor.

I also picked up a complete WJ Dana 30 today. Came with a Ruffstuff diff cover, DOM tie rod with 1 ton offset ends. Has the passenger high steer arm for the drag link, as well as easily salvageable OTA weld on track bar bracket and a 3 link upper bracket as well. Going to swap everything over to my current xj axle.

I also got hooked up on a set of WJ Synergy Ball Joints. The uppers are identical to the XJ, but the lowers will have the proper taper for the WJ knuckles. They will be here tomorrow.

I'm pretty stoked on this build actually. It's going to cost a pretty penny, but it will be solid in the end and I'm sure I will be happy.

Thanks a lot for all of the input guys. The info you guys are sharing with me is very helpful.

But nothing is covered is the u joint breaks takes out the shaft the shaft chick takes out the ball joints

Warrantee will cover the broken parts. But what about your time and efforts trying to get off the trail? What about your buddies rig that breaks while pulling you out of the trail while broken down? What about the ruined weekend you spent wrenching rather than having fun and relaxing?

I'm not going to preech here about how much of your money you should or shouldn't spend. For me the few extra hundred dollars is worth the piece of mind to buy the good stuff. But indeed it is your money, your time, and your friends, so you make the call.
