MWC Home brew thread

I usually take mine from the secondary to the keg, but add about half the normal amount of priming sugar. I let it sit for a couple weeks and then throw the CO2 to the keg and begin serving. It can be a bit foamy for a couple of glasses, but levels off quickly and has nice head.

Spiced....sounds like a great winter brew. Wanna share the recipe for that one?

I picked up a bunch of extra brew equipment when friend discovered he is diabetic. Wound up with carboys, soda kegs, CO2, everything but his lagering fridge. Haven't bottled a batch since getting the kegs.
Hell, I'm a diabetic, and I home brew. My blood sugar is under reasonable control, though.

I have gotten thoroughly spoiled with NB's packaged extract kits. Fresh ingredients, specialty grains crushed only a few hours before I brew, and fresh yeast. Doesn't hurt that their St. Paul retail outlet is only a few minutes off my commute home.

Does homebrew have a different affect on diabetes than commercial beer?

the problem with beer for me is it raises my sugar's while drinking but then slams me down low after a few hours. when i only drink a couple beers its usually ok but its when i slam a 30 that its noticeable :D i don't do that much any more. and i wouldn't do that with homebrew.

Is there a difference? Probably. Different alcohol contents, as well as residual sugars. Gotta remember that alcohol digests down to glucose in your bloodstream. Slamming a quart of 14% ABV doesn't do good things to a diabetic.

Just keep the tester handy then. 10-4

Not sure, but in my friend's case the doc told him to layoff adult beverages in any form. Then again he has severe adult onset diabetes and has to inject himself daily regardless of physical activity or diet. I think with the lesser versions of this disease it might be OK to drink a little, controlling the blood sugar with an adjustment to diet, physical activity, and meds. However, I would leave all that up to my doctor just to be safe.

Hey Jeff thx for the link I added these guys to my favorite list. I see spiced beer on the horizon. It will make a nice addition when I wheel into the family hunting lodge in a few weeks for a weekend of fun by the fireplace.

I put my beer into primary on Sunday. I no longer have any bubbling in my airlock. Should I be alrighta switching to secondary Saturday?

For sure!

Went into secondary just now!

beer yummmmm

ill be brewing up an oatmeal stout tonight

You didn't taste it?

I'll always siphon 3-4 ounces into a chilled mug.

If it tastes good warmish and flat, you know it will be good cold and carbonated.

No, it's Two-Hearted Ale. The kit used to be called Three-Hearted Ale, but Bells made them change the name.
