Musicians?

Most do that dont start in r&r, c&w, folk, basic blues, and any offshoot thereof. If you learn to read a bit, and get really good with chords, you'll be lightyears ahead of many including some that actually get paid for what they do!

x2. Like I said before, don't be afraid to go get some lessons. No shame in a grown man getting taught a worth while instruction. Theres more to music than reading off of some sheet with numbers. Go learn music, how to read music. Sheet music not just tab. Tab is great for when you are learning or if you just want to jam to a song you heard on the radio but really learning how music works will help you make you're own riffs and be able to work out tab on you're own. If you want a guitar look at some Fenders (<3).

Straight line? Are you in a marching band or something? On my planet, to play well takes years of study, alot of playing, and listening, no matter what you you play.If the drummer and bass player cant keep it together all hell will break loose no matter who's playing what up front. If the front men cant play or sing in tune, theres nothing the rythm section can do.No instrument is more important than the other, and each one has its technical draw backs that the player has to deal with so its never detected. The guy who started this thread just wants to do a little playing, and enjoy himself, thats what is important.

Yeah I'm definitely not looking to start playing in a band or anything like that. I just want to be able to sit around the fire or on my deck and strum away and not look like any more of a turd than I already do.

People that play drums strike me as being something other than human. I think being able to play ANY instrument is impressive but there's a lot going on with those drums.

When I was in grade school our class had the recorder concert. I was actually asked by my teacher to just move my fingers and pretend to be playing b/c I was so horrible. Years later I would recover when I was working as a mechanic at a bicycle shop. Some of the other mechanics and myself thought it would be great to form a band. None of us played anything of course. It was going to be entirely "air". Air bass, air guitar, air drums. We were going to cover all the greats. We had connections at some of the finer establishments in St. Louis (Blueberry Hill, Ciceros, Red Sea, etc.). We thought it would be a scream to try and get a gig and then actually do the air thing. It never came to fruition. We got together and always drank beer and shot pool and talked about the band. We were going to grow mullets. We even had a name picked out....Mobile Home. Black shirts with the logo in white. The first single....Double Wide. I digress. I'm gonna go check out a music store tomorrow unless I go fishing again.

Yeah. University drumline. I play drumset also and when playing with a band it is very important to listen to each other. thats why live performances have monitors pointed at the band. so they can hear themselvess and each other.

To the original thread starter: find somebody that knows how to play and is patient enough to teach you, or take lessons. no shame in taking lessons to get started. Once you learn the basics, you can teach yourself from there. Trying to teach yourself from the beginning isnt a good idea if you dont have much music background.
