MARK YOUR CALENDAR!! Winterfest 2012 March 2-4

Hey guys I'm thinking of coming out for my first Naxja Event . and it looks like winter fest is it ..

I went and picked up a set of built axles last weekend from one of the guys from mojo off road there in IN and they got me exited about it so I'm starting a checklist of things i need to figure out before I'm sure i can come ..

I know ill be having to get a CB and an extinguisher (shouldv'e done that awhile ago)

anyway i had a question on the tech inspection ..

this is probably a stupid question but do i have to have gloves and a safety device for sudden loss of tension in my winch line if i have a synthetic line??

i kinda thought they didn't snap back really and i always used gloves with my old steel line but never felt the need with my synthetic..
If I'm wrong about one or both of those things i need to learn that.
(safety first)

I did a few jeep jamborees and a moab trip years ago in my old wrangler.
But i figure ill run greens as really I'm a newb .. and this will probably be my first time wheeling with lockers so id like to get a feel for them.. (arbs front/rear)
(I'm on 31's and 4.5" lift if your curious)

Edit : hmm i wonder if this was where that question goes really

Make sure you have proper towpoints and don't weld tow hooks to anything. The terrain at Badlands will let you test out your lockers as well as everything else on your rig. Usually wrapping a strap around the winchline or draping a jacket over it is acceptable. You probably won't have to pull cable on Green so you should be alright there. I am locked up front with 32's and I don't have any problems running on green.

Boss, we have a newbie program that we started last year, we're making significant improvements on the program for this year. you don't have the new to wheeling, but it's a great way to get to know how we do things here.

So my front towpoint is d ring tabsthat are just my bumper mounts extended past the bumper they are 3/8" with another 1/4" "welded" to it for thickness. Is that suffice?

I'm still Figuring out the details of if i am able to come but i will be trying to get that settled quickly .. ( I REALLY want to)

If i do i think i would be very interested in something like that , i am always interested in any tips on safety and technique .. And it would be a good opportunity for me to meet some people (which could make this alot more enjoyable) ..

Also Thanks for the heads up FlexdXJ ,about the strap or jacket i think i will start doing that whether I'm with you guys or not ( i wheel with my daughter alot) safety is very important to me .

I have a Logan's metals pre runner bumper it came with D-ring tabs they seem pretty beefy so I'm good there..

and in the rear i have the mopar hitch and i usually stick the loop of my strap in there with the pin i use for my 2" ball.. is that Safe enough?

I want a c-rok rear bumper but i want alot of things.. Hah!

You're good then! I'd suggest one of these for the hitch: http://www.jeepinoutfitters.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=374 I have one laying around from my old Jeep but its going on the DD XJ. Its been pulled on hard a couple times and held up great!

The pin through the hitch is safe enough, but on a hard pull you might bend the pin and you will have a heck of a time getting the pin out of the hitch.

I have a forged steel hook that goes into the receiver, but something like what Aaron linked is a lot easier to deal with as it keeps the strap in place.

Have you ever seen a "real" hitch pin bend?

In theory it seems a lot less likely to bend the pin if it is holding something snug fitting into the receiver, instead of a strap that is possibly putting force on the middle of the pin. I see your point though, I don't know what grade a hitch pin is and I haven't figured out how much force it would take to cause it to yield (I'm no engineer) but based on shear strengths for similarly sized bolts I would conservatively guess it's well over 10,000#, so it's not likely to cause a problem.

I've been pulled out by my hitch pin a few times and I've never seen one bend, but I have been warned of such a thing happening so I thought I would pass it on. For $30 I think the D-ring hitch insert is pretty slick.
