I live in Scotts Valley (near Santa Cruz) and yesterday I started looking for some good maps of the Shaver Lake area. I couldn't find a thing. I even started looking at hiking books to try and find something. Any ways every year I go fishing with my father-in-law up there and I want to do some wheeling while I'm there this year. Can you guys give me some direrction on where to go for some really good maps for that area? Or even some directions? We camp at Brett's Mill every year. And btw I did search this and came up with stuff that was to general for me, I'm looking for more specific trails and such.

Welcome to Naxja by the way. March is our membership drive month, and it would be nice to see your name in red, and be a member of the Sierra Chapter. If you need any information about the trails around this area hit me up PM.

Although it wont help you when you are away from your computer, I have finally found a awesome and FREE service for getting hi-res 24k USGS topo maps.

This is what you need:
1) Google Earth
2) DDS Topo Map Overlay file

After you install google earth, then install the overlay file. It will take you a few minutes to figure out how to use them together (especially if your not familiar w/ Google Earth).

This basically allows you to download ANY - yes ANY topo map in the united states at the 24k or 100k size. The only drawback is that each file is a TIFF that is 13 - 18 megs each.

This has been an incredible tool for me recently in finding cool stuff and trails.
