LUVMYJP Plate Tour 2006

I'll be in the UP next weekend, I've got a few ideas for it :D

Well the plate needed some action, and I was able to get it out in the snow and have a pretty fun weekend.
A little background: I used to go to school in Houghton, MI @ Michigan Tech. I love the area and like getting out and exploring. The area is rich in mining history, the copper boom ranging from the 1840's and finally petering out in the 1950's and there are plenty of ghost towns and ruins along the way. The unexpected snow did hamper some sights to see. And I'll keep this to mostly plate pictures.

After leaving Houghton the first stop was Gay

Then our first step off of paved road, the seasonal roads is what its all about in the Keweenaw.

A stop off at the local watering hole...

And on the way out of town, the remaining structure of the Mohawk stamp mill. 225' of above ground height.

To be continued...

Heading up the coast of the lake was tons of fun in all wheel drive on unplowed roads.
Then we turn offroad near Lac La Belle and start climbing in altitude.

The plate then attempted to make a snow angel

And then basking in the afternoon sun, that was quite a surprise and definitely nice to see.

The XJ definitly got a workout to this point, and yes my lights are on!
It was also here that the bumper caps needed to go again as they only got put back on for the insurance adjuster.

Then seen here at the Montreal River, nice clear water and snow on the trees wish I had my good camera along for the journey.

Just jumped on this thread and I see that it hasnt visited the Southwest... how can i get it over here?

After the Montreal River we stopped at Hoar Lake, no swimming this time of year but the plated wanted to :D. I would have tried to make it to Fish Cove as well had I had another hour of daylight to work with. Its a really neat rocky twisty drive on a trail narrower than my Jeep. For pics of this area in summer, search "Keweenaw Camping" on here.

Then I made it out to the tip, the snowmobile maps stay out year round-ish.

Then back tracking a little we made it out to the rocket test site (about a half mile up the shoreline from the previous pics).

More to Come

I love that it is still traveling.

I would love to see a picture of the back. It has been years since I have had the plate, would love to see how full the back is!

Not too bad, I'll snap one before I send it on its way.

It started getting dark so I started moving quicker. Upon arriving in Copper Harbor where US 41 starts (or finishes).

and the sign saying "Begin US 41"

But before leaving town for good I had to make it up Brockway Mtn.
Seen here at the "nose" overlooking Copper Harbor

And then at the top looking out over Lake Superior. This is 1328' ASL or 726' above the lake. The road up here was constructed as a federal work project during the Great Depression. If you can make out the map were are actually very close to the lake shore.

After such a long day of driving, we needed to relax a little and enjoy a beer at the local micro brewery the Keweenaw Brewing Company

And then play a game a beer pong with my friends where I used to live.

I'll wrap it up tomorrow with the final pictures.

Well with finals and all it's been kind of busy for me. Here's the rest of the trip. And then the plate will be on its merry way.

The Portage entry light, we're about halfway out to it from shore.

The Quincy Mine #2 Hoist House
P1020342.jpg

These are the most complete mining relics up here as this is part of Keweenaw Nat'l Park. The rest of the mining industry sits in ruins wherever you look up here.
That is a giant piece of "float copper", how it was removed from the ground. They have a much larger piece on display inside that weighs 17 tons.

And then the Miner, on the way out of town.

And there you have it.

Nice pics!

The wife and I love the Keweenaw, we were last there in September.
Never been to the Gay Bar, though :D

We always load up on the smoked whitefish from that place across the street from the mine.

Where exactly has it been ? I just looked through the pictures, and I seen it on Go Jeep's Jeep ? lol He's from Australia no ? As well as Europe ? However, i Didn't see anything from New York.
