Knucklehead's blog

Did you run any numbers on the 3 link or just have at it?

after breaking the rear output shaft in the d-300 t-case last weekend in hollister i decided it is time to tear this p.o.s. apart for the winter.
pulled both t-cases & took them apart to determine what all i destroyed. looks like it was just the rear output shaft. now i need to decide if i want to just fix the d-300 or sell it & the 231 doubler & buy a 4 speed atlas. i am looking at a few options.
i removed all the rear suspension today to sell & cut off all the mounts off the rear 14 bolt axle to get it ready for the 4 links & new truss. i ordered up a shave kit that is worth 2" more ground clearance. still need to order up a detroit locker for it though.
i need to pull the gas tank out tomorrow & start the relocation mounting.

Booty fab man.

You need an upgrade. There's probably some good holiday sales on a new welding unit. I've seen your tools. Scary stuff.

Maybe one like this-

i don't have the mad skillz it takes to operate that type of fancypants machinery. :dunce:

If you end up needing an extra wrench i could lend a hand on the weekends.

now you tell me! :roflmao:
j/k, all the hard dirty work is pretty much done now.
rear end is stripped of all the old craptastic mounting brackets & getto fab truss. i cut off the caliper mounts since they were welded on crooked. i need to order a detroit locker for it monday to replace the welded carrier.

i just pulled the fuel tank but can't figure out how to drain the last few gallons out. my siphon tube doesn't want to get to the bottom. is there a trick or do i just hang it upsidown & dump the gas on the ground? :skull1:

Open the tank and look inside using a couple of matches for a light source. The gas will be gone in seconds. Then find a way to reattach your eyebrows. Continue as normal.

ok, i woke up this morning & i seem to be in the burn ward at a mental hospital. :fuse:

as soon as i heal & am released i need to do 2 things.
1) do this !!!1 to the_weirdo for his bright ideas.
2) figure a better way to empty a gas tank that does not involve an open flame. :gee:

i just ordered a new 4 speed atlas for the red p.o.s.
advanced adapters has a killer sale that ends at 4:00 today, so i got my order in just in time!
now i need to patiently wait for 6 weeks until brown santa plops that package on my doorstep.
:party::party::party::party:

Madness! It never stops! Only the best for the Red P.O.S. :dunce:

How much are you asking for the NP231/D300 with busted output shaft?

the box for rocks kit is $500 for the parts to convert a 231 into a front doubler then you gotta cut it apart, machine it, & weld it back together.
a D300 seems to be worth between $300 to $500 for a good core.
i machined the shifter casting to maximize ground clearance & modified the front shift rail to allow front only 2 high drive.
mine has a northwest fab 3 stick cable shifter with new cables.
the insides are fine (it's all apart right now) & only needs a new output shaft.
oem shafts are on ebay for under $250 or you could upgrade to a 32 spline output from advanced adapters for around $400 shipped. (i got a quote on pirate today).
you end up with 1.1, 2.63, 2.72, & 7.15 gear ratios with this combo,
along with the triple stick setup so you can do front digs.
so, i am thinking around $1k complete with the shifters would be a good deal.
hey, that's less than 1/3 of a new atlas 4 speed! :rof:

ordered up a artec rear truss for the 14 bolt today. another cyber monday deal!
also got some steel today to build a set of rocker replacement sliders for mini-boatsides.
should get the new gas tank skid metal from my friends fab shop tomorrow so i can start fitting it as well. the tank is now sitting inside the heep & the bottom will be flush with the bottom of the frame so i think i picked up about 8" of ground clearance.
i think i need another job to pay for all this crap!

hey i ran into you way back sept 2010 in Hollister, took some pics of you guys at mini Rubicon... basically just joined NAXJA, came across your thread and thought that rig looks familiar.
