Kayaks

I assume thats about the best I'll get at that price.

PS I'm pretty sure Perception makes "The Prodigy"

Got a link to these stackers?.... That should work on my rack...?

-------------------

I bought the A/Ts to get a lot of miles at them... I got the first chance today in muddy rocks and just was just sliding all over the place while a stock Sami walked right up what I couldn't... *Shame*

Don't waste your money on a Perception. I have a 8' Perception and a mirror image Galyans brand 8' (Gaylans is now Dick's Sporting Goods). The Galyans kayak is the exact same thing and was $75 cheaper. I think I paid $250 for the Galyans kayak. I've had them for about 4 or 5 years now and other than some scratches from the sand and rocks...nothing wrong with them at all. The 8' is a good compromise for an all around 'yak. I use mine in the ocean, rivers (up to class 3 rapids), lakes, and fishing ponds. Do yourself, really your lady, a favor and don't skimp on the paddles. The cheap ones can be uncomfortable and can also break while your using them...that is NOT fun. Get a decet set of paddles.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Oh yeah....and to answer your question about fitting them on your rack. I can stick 2 up there...I used to be able to do 3 before I got my roof rack. Here is a pic of 2 yaks and a Canoe....don't tell me anything can't be done...lol...and don't laugh, the Jeep wasn't lifted yet.

Is that a Dagger on the top right?

A couple more good brands to check out are Old Town and Dagger.
A cheap kayak will last you as long as any of them. The problem with cheap is they are pretty basic and generally dont perform as well as the more expensive ones. They can be just as fun though, as long as you dont expect great handling or blazing speed. Shorter boats wont be as fast and wont track as well as a longer boat but will be faster to turn.
Ive personally got an Old Town tandem, a couple Daggers and a cheap SOT that I cant recall the name of.

No, it's a Perception. That's the one that I said is the EXACT same as the Galyans (the all red one) to the left...only the Galyans one was $75 or maybe even $100 cheaper.

X2 on the Old Towns. Here is one, 9.5' basic all-around kayak for $249.99. This is really similar to my two...but I think mine are 8'ers. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...030000&parentPage=search&searchId=21983430003

I recommend getting something like this for what you will be using it for. Like I said, I have used mine in the surf (that is a blast...until you get tossed end over end, lol), rivers, lakes, ponds...whatever. The only thing I wouldn't and haven't done in mine is go in anything greater than a Class 2+ rapid.

thats cool you got some kayaks, I have to ocean kayaks that are completly open. I love them and generally use them in the surf. They are very stable and are great for riding waves. They fit in the jeep in some THULE carriers, its a bit hard to get off the roof, and ive lifted it again since this picture so getting them off the roof is a bit of a chore, but worth it.

Have you given any thought to a tandem kayak? If it's going to be you and your girl you could cover alot of ground with two people paddling. I have a 17ft touring boat that I paddle. It fits on the factory rack just fine with some pads. I just have to make sure I tie it off in the front and back also.

We have a local Academy Sports that seems to keep a decent stock of less expensive boats.

I don't know much about the pelican brand, but they sure are cheap even the 14ft tandem is priced pretty good.

Theres no way in hell I'd buy a tandem. She's very independant and I'm going to have my own boat! lol

A 17' boat seems like a lot... thats 3 feet longer than my ski boat!

I think I counted eight different poster in this thread and they are all paying.:):):):). Means nothing, just kinda interesting.
Anyway, Dont get a tandem unless your relationship is very strong;)

Dont be afraid to go to a kayak store (a real kayak store) and test a couple boats. Alot of them will let you rent them and if you buy, they will take off the rental fee. Thats how my wife and I got into kayaking, we rented a couple to see how we would like it

EDIT: Oh, heres a decent site http://www.paddling.net/. Theres a good buyers guide and a good forum. people are always glad to help with good advice.

Yeah we have a couple good places around here... I just wanted to see what else was available along the lines of small rec boats.... I think I have decided on a perception like I was set on in the beginning.

Are you near Greenville? My wife and her family are from there, I'll ask.

Yes 20 minutes... I konw of several rivers to go to but where is there that has shuttles and what not.... Somewhere to go rent a Kayak and ride and get picked up and dragged back... Although, it would be fun to offroad in the Jeep and leave it there to load up and drive back myself... I'd probably paddle off of a damn waterfall! I'll be buying and SE River guide book with the Kayaks.
