JUST FOR BANDIT

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

ya, thats what brad said

im kinda in a bind I guess and I got four options still available

option a- just do em myself, I will save some coin, but I run the risk of screwing it up big time.

option b- down and dirty offroad in reading, they only charge 150 an axle, but not a lot of guys have had gears done there, so im up in the air about them

option c- full circle, if its 250 and axle out of the jeep, htis may be worth a hard look

option d- endless mtn fab, I have talked to him in forever, but I remember him sayin 250 an axle for labor

What gears do you have to be installed

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

brandi's doesn't wanna do my gears since there used r&p's...

yeah, Rich is like that. quite a perfectionist. he wants to be able to stand behind his work. he wants it perfect or he won't touch it.

its understandable, but from my understanding, using used gears isnt a whole lot different, they can just take more time

but he's the pro.

Typically the "hang-up" with using used gears is that as soon as a new set of gears is installed and "used", it sets a certain wear pattern in the gear teeth whether they have been driven on for 500 miles or 50,000 miles. Once gears are removed, it is virtually impossible to re-set a set of used gears the EXACT same way as they were in the SAME axle, let alone a whole new housing.

An example... The gears that went in my MJ D44 were a used set from the XJ D44, and Dave at Full Circle told me this ahead of time, and he set them up as close to the old wear pattern as possible, but he said they will make noise. And they do "sing" a bit going down the road, but I went into it knowing that this could happen.

The very high rate of unhappy customers that come back to the shop where it was installed (complaining of vibes/roar noise/singing coming from the axle(s)) is why some shops won't touch used gears...

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

I got ya, I have heard that too, and it can eventually go away as a new wear pattern develops.

so dave at full circle will do used gear setups, if your understanding that they may not be perfectly silent?

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

I'm kind of the president of the Dave-at-Full-Circle fan club, but I can guarantee you that he'll shoot straight with you, and you can trust what he says. Give him a call and talk with him for a few minutes - its rediculous how much he knows about Jeeps.

And he is usually really really fast - if he isn't too busy, he'll have your axles back in a few days.

One word of caution though ..... he has a way to get you to spend a lot more money than you wanted to. I now only have one kidney - but my Jeep is hooked up!!

Your right, it can eventually go away, but it can also get worse as a new pattern develops too.... there is no ryhme or reason to it, its just the risk you take with this sort of thing. You can hedge your bets though and take a very close look at the existing wear pattern on the gears. If the pattern looks good and doesn't seem to be too deep or indented into the teeth, you may just have a slight whine, but it will work perfectly otherwise. Take them into Shop class and see what Mr Mac thinks, he should have some experience with this too.

Full Circle did it for me, he has done quite a bit of work for me through the years though. The best I can tell you is give him a call...

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

Take a grinder, and grind in a special pattern into your gears so they will sing christmas carols to you. A guy at Half Circle did it for me. ;)

Re: NAC Lots-O- Posts Thread-Part Deux

Just to let you know ive had gears done for my jeep and truck here http://www.mdracecars.com/
Fair prices, good know how, and he actually sold and installed used gears for me. They work on everything and anything.

give a call up to Storks automotive in bernville
http://www.storksauto.com/index.php/about-storks-automotive

Gene doesn't do much jeep work any more, and kinda specializes in plows but they have a huge history of jeep work, and is the one shop I have ever let touch my jeep..
but even though they mostly do plows now, they might still squeeze a jeep in and its worth asking seeing as this would be a 'slow' time for plows.
