One of these days Id love to find a clean MJ, Ive had 3 Cherokees but am not familiar with the MJ`s. How do they hold up with moderate 4wd work? what was the last year? was the HO 4.0 in the laters? Im 6'3" would one be to cramped inside ya think. Ive seem most in Washington/Ore for sale here in the west, but rarely any near me so I havent even sat in one yet. There happens to be a 85,V6,5spd here that from the pic looks like a 4wd but not sure yet. They want 2K for it. I realize the 2.8 wasent all that great but??
Any info would be appricated or a good MJ website so I can do some research.
Thank You.

. How do they hold up with moderate 4wd work?

well.

what was the last year?

1992.

was the HO 4.0 in the laters?

yes. 91 and 2. Earlier was the Renix format.

I'm going with yes.

holdout.

I had a Cherokee with the 2.8 and it was good for what I used it for. Freeway and sanddune blasting. Keep her tached up and cooking and no problems. Keep the oil changed OFTEN and the motor will last a long time. Try it on slow going or rocks and it stinks.

MJ's hold up really well to much more than moderate offroading. I beat my 88 without mercy and the only reason I no longer own it is that pesky telaphone pole that jumped in the way. I think the MJ's advantages are the longer rear springs and lighter weight but many of the parts both oem and aftermarket that arent shared with the XJ are hard to find or in the case of aftermarket never were developed. I'm only 5'6" and even I feel a bit cramped because the foot area is kinda tight. I would avoid the 86 and earlier GM drivetrain units and I had bad luck with the Peugot tranny (3 in 140,000 miles) so I skipped those as well. I recently picked up a long bed 87 auto 4x4 in decent shape for $1700 and have found 5 or 6 other 87 and 88's for $2500 or less. Fun unique trucks.
