Now all i need is two of these...

And figure out which light should go where..

Pretty obvious for the backup and amber light ... but just not 100% sure about the the two reds...

Which one should go on the bottom? The smaller light that needs the new socket?

Normally the bottom is a fog light and the top is a dual parker/brake. Personally I would make both top and bottom dual parker/brake light as what I have done with my euro lights and wagoneer ones.

Stop.

You already *have* that socket man!

Unless you have the wrong 4.0 Litre emblem on you've got a Renix XJ, that's from before Chrysler deleted the extra marker lamp in the tail lights.

If you look at your current tail lamp boxes you'll see that htey're like this:

O <- Stop / Tail 2057 Bulb
o <- Tail only, dim 97 Bulb
O <- Turn 1156 Bulb
O <- Reverse 1156 Bulb

Plus the small side marker in the side.

The trick here is that the second lamp, the 97 bulb, is behind the reflector field and 97's burn out a lot faster than 1156's and 2057's so a lot of people don't even realize a light should be there (I never knew it until I was working on my 89's tail lamps. Furthermore later XJ's (possible cutoff year of 1991 but I could be wrong here) do not have that socket (however up to a point will have the hole for the lamp, eventually they filled it in) so a lot of people don't know about it.

You can (and I would) use that socket with the 97 Bulb for a perfect tail lamp in the lower red field.

If you decide to put rear fog lamps in their place you must get new sockets (just cut out some turn or reverse lamp sockets from a junker XJ) and I would run 1156 bulbs.

See? Yet another reason that Renix is better than the rest!

RENIX FTW!!

Ive already put it back together, but now that i think about the images of it that are in my head i remember 4 sockets and the small yellow socket.. Sound right to you? Yeah thinking about it even more that makes since.. cause the bulb thats in there (the 97 right?) is really small..

So use the second one (the 97 ) in the bottom? Ok so what about the small yellow socketed one then? Just remove the bulb and tuck it away?

Also , what do you guys think about the small gap that is present with the test fit of the new taillight assembly? Should i make something to fill the gap and rivet it in place?? Advice there?

My '91 has the small side marker bulb. One of my brake lights blew out a few days ago and I had the lens off and saw it. I don't know if it will reach down to the bottom though.

Also my top bulb was an 1157 but that's detail

I think he was actually saying the RENIX had another dedicated tail light socket... and then in 91 with the HO, they deleted it. The side marker was always there.

Yes, the Renix has the second one for the 97 and I'd use that one in the bottom. All North American Spec Cherokees from '84 - '96 have the side marker lamp (bulb 194) with the yellow socket. (Note though, European, Australian, and Asian XJ's do not).

What does the side marker do? Is it another tail, or is it a signal?

It's just a steady on marker lamp, same circuit as the tail and park lamps.

So then what should we do with it you think?? Remove the bulb tape it off, and tuck it away?

Yes, I'd tuck it back into the quarter panel area.

What gap do you mean? Is it on the side (where you didn't photograph :twak: )? (where the wires to you old tail lamps are coming out)

If so I'd go to the auto parts store and get some black weatherstrip tape for campers. If you apply it carefully you can make it look correct and not noticeable.

okay then what do those of us without Renix do with the bottom socket?

Buy a Renix Jeep!

You'll need to obtain a socket, just cut one out of any junker XJ (go after either the turn or backup ones because they'll be easier to find) and run a 97 in there.
