is anyone thinking of ordering some retreads?

the other thread got me thinking, next month I'm going to order some high-tec 31's. If anyone else is considering maybe we can combine orders and save a buck on shipping.
I don't know if it'll actually help or not but I'll check into it.

edit: sure does, fedex ground is $40 for 4 or 8 tires.

Don't take this the wrong way, but my tires isn't exactly an area where'd I'd want to save a buck.

hey to each their own. Some like the re's some don't. For less than $300 for a set I'll give them a shot.

High Tech: I ran a set of 33's on my 91 Zuk, granted it is lighter and not a daily driver (sure) for about 3 years, taking a few 3 hour road trips to go off roading. They did my well.

Here is my honest opinion of Hi tec retreads OTR muds. I have had them for about 15K and they definitely have some issues. First and foremost however I will say that the 5 or so times I went offroad with them(usually at badlands or rockport) they did extremely well. They seemed very sticky and shed decently well. Then, I got a slow leak in the passenger front tire and it was all downhill from there, even after having it repaired. The front tires started wearing very unevenly making me think i had alignment issues or bad ball joints or something. I replaced/fixed everything and this is what continued happening.

After about 10K

And currently(on my rubicon not my XJ but you can still see)

The fronts are almost completely bald now, no matter how I rotated them, kept the air pressure up every day, nothing stopped them from wearing unevenly once they began. I have never had any tread seperation issues. I would rate their noise on par with the stock goodyear mtrs on my rubicon.

In the beginning i liked the tires because they were so inexpensive. But the first time I drove them in the snow I was scared for my life. Since ive moved to denver for the last 3 storms I refuse to drive the vehicle the tires are on for fear of my/others lives and insurance rates! Even in the rain they slip over the painted lines in the road, its bad. I will never buy them again but when I did I was a poor college student and that was all I could afford for the time it was fine but i learned my lesson. If youd like to come check them out first hand feel free. In fact you can have the two good ones in the rear once I get new treads on the rubi!

I had some on my XJ and they gripped really well in the dry and in the rain, and again, after about 15k miles, they started wearing funny, but still had a little more than 1/4" of tread left. I've now got a set of used MT/R's waiting on me.

Don't get me wrong, they're awesome offroad for the price, but they're noisy and just not as good as say, BFG muds or Goodyears in tread life. For a trail rig that needs some cheapass tires, go for it, and while they work well on road, they're not the best to live with.

There is a reason it is against the law for you to run retreads on a semi or bus on the front axle.

They are dangerous. Period!

I am totally in agreement with DJ here. Save money elsewhere not on tires.

Well, I was pretty skeptical at first and a bit on the cautious side about retreads. Certainly there are some companies out there that I'd never buy from.

I initially had posted that I was totally against the idea of re-treads on off road vehicles, but spent a little time in research on High-Tec in particular.

I couldn't find any negative things during my search except for the life expectancy of the tread and some complaints of road noise. Most reported about 25K miles from a set, but more importantly, nothing found about tread separation, bulging, out of round etc....

JP magazine did an article on a set of tires : http://www.jpmagazine.com/shop4parts/154_0605_hi_tec_retread_tire/
pretty interesting read.

I'd still like to see what these tires do after lots of air-down, air-up wheeling and having been folded over rocks frequently, but overall, I gotta admit, they seem pretty solid.

you won't find much negative said about hi-tec on the forums either. I'll give them a shot, st 85/tire they should be OK plus I like the sound of the green diamond stuff.
Can't help you with the airing down since, like everyone else around here, I don't actually go 4 wheeling, I just talk about it on the internethasta
