Man I hate looking at yours it makes me wish I went through with the gunmetal pearl instead of herculiner lol. Mine is only on there temporarily so I don't get pulled over again, I still got a little perfecting to do. Looks good as hell though man.

Edit: how do your corners look? I notcied my radius's were a little off, but not enough for anyone else to point out.

my corners look fine, but it is off just a little on the driverside...I need it to come out just a little...I will fix it later on...it's more than ok for right now.

when are your lights coming in?

i'm not a welder. i don't even have a welder but, this looks like a good excuse to get one and learn..... what kind of welder at bare minimum is required to weld this 3/16" steel up? i'm looking at a 115V 15A input/ 63A-90A output, no gas, mig welders from harbor freight ($159). would this thing work?

It will work, but what is the duty cycle?, you are better off just getting a good welder, I had no real prior experience...this was the first major project for me....I spent the money on a good welder, I have a 175 amp 220v lincoln running on gas, and I love it. Just tack it all together, and ship it to me...I'll weld it up for you

Hate to say it but have to agree with you. The paint you used just killed the good job you were doing and is going to be a bitch to keep clean as well.

come on dan...srape that crap off and go with the gun metal...

But it works so good for running over stuff!!! Lol I definately wish I would have invested a couple more hours of filler welding. I'm planning on fixing everything sometime soon. Definately not planning on getting another bumper so I don't mind a repair project. PS, it won't be hard to get off. I have anytime access to a mdeia blasting room :)

Oh and the fogs should be here sometime next week:mad: Oem C5 Corvette fogs, they have a sick cutoff. As for the re-prep/paint... Thats gonna have to wait a few weeks. I'm goin to NY this weekend to see my bro (baseballneal86) and hopefully do a little driving. Justin, how did you go about shaping the metal so smoothly? I mean i know how, but did you have to goober up your outer welds so that they could be ground down? because they look a lot smaller in the first build pics than they do in the finished ones.

I only had to add metal to a few small spots, where I was running out of gas, but all the rest was Dave's handy work.

one question for those with "super-ultra-mega bumpers". are you concerned that in an accident, your bumper is the strongest link? i would think that in a minor accident that, rather than bending your oem bumper, you'll either tear out the bumper mounts or at the least tweak the front end considerably..... any cause for concern before i start spending $$$$

If you want "super-ultra-mega" rigidity, get a Rigid Co...if you want a low cost bumper kit, buy this, you can add to it as you feel. Chip has done most of the hard work for you, his design is is real nice, and easy for you to customize your self.

the rigidity of this particular bumper, or any after market bumper, is not in question.... the question is: if one removes the "crumple zone" (being the oem bumper) and replaces it with an aftermarket bumper of superior strength (compared to the oem bumper) during a minor accident, will the superior strength of the after market bumper severely damage the front end where as the oem bumper would just crumple leaving the rest of the vehicle in tact????

it would make sense that you would have more "frame" damage since oem bumpers are designed to crumple and aftermarket ones you are supposed to hit things with and they'll be fine. i'd still rather risk it and have a superior aftermarket bumper on my rig.

I don't think that the damage is going to be any worse.
if you look at the stock bumper, there's not enough mass there to absorb any kind of impact energy. it's just going to fold.
The next thing to get crumpled is the frame rail, sitting directly behind the bumper.
now, an aftermarket bumper may transmit the energy farther down the rail and crumple it somewhere else, but in my opinion, you're going to end up hosed no matter what bumper you have if you hit something hard enough to do uni rail damage.

I can say that I hit a largish rock in Tellico doing about 10 MPH, it bent my JCR bumper a bit, but didn't do a thing to the mounts or the uni rails.

Longer mounting brackets with more tie-in points helps a lot. If it's a car crash you're worried about, I can vouche that the frame rails are good up to 25 mph, at least thats as fast as I've gone. I totaled my friends honda accord in my brothers jeep, and only put a couple minor scratches on the bumper. 3/16 and 1/4 plate>18 gauge, bottom line.

Fog lights came in :)

The cutoff on these is absolutely ridiculous. I should have them hooked up after the weekend.

I wanna hear some more about the crumple zone on after market bumpers. Is there any way to make this particular bumper with a facia that would absorb an impact and not tweak the uniframe? I know everywhere has stupid drivers... but I think they're following me around out here in the center of CA and I can't seem to dodge them...
