Salary position should always counter, worse they can say is no. Do this especially if you already have a job. Just don't get greedy.
Hourly positions you can try but most of the time the answer is no.
As far as I'm concerned if you come to me with a resignation don't expect a counter, if you are unhappy enough to go looking you will probably end up looking again within the next year anyway.

If you are going to counter offer, you need to have your shit together and let them know what you bring to the table and what your worth is to them as an employer and how you will better their company and its production/bottom line. If you can't do that,then they have no reason to offer more than they did up front.

It is a salary position. I don't have any sales experience but I have a ton of knowledge in what I'll be selling. The way I'm looking at it is they are going to be offering me less than they are willing to pay. No different than any deal being made with a vehicle etc.
He himself has told me what I have to offer, so I'll remind him of those things. Plus they are in a pinch. He said if he could he would bring me on next monday he would. I obviously said no to that due to providing my current employer with a solid two weeks.
Worst case scenario he says no. I'm talking to him at 7:30 this morning.
This is my first time doing this but I don't want to just settle for something, I already have a good secure job, just want a different career path.

Poisoned steak is much quieter than a gun shot, also, when I shoot a menacing dog, I have to clean it up, if I poison a menacing dog, it will go home to die, and make a mess all over their house and yard. Bonus points if they take it to the vet and end up with a huge bill....

Some of ya'll make me laugh. In my family, our dog is part of the family. We take care and responsibility for him and his actions. If your neighbors are not then the fault is theirs, not the animal. Those of you that would shoot or worse, poison (coward) a pet because the owner is a pos...ya'll are pathetic. If your neighbors kid comes in the yard and has a fight with your kid and kicks their ass... you gonna beat up or kill the kid? Probably.

seriously. always counter a salary position. they aren't going to offer you the top dollar that they would pay someone, so there is room in the budget for them to increase the salary. when i took my job back in July, i countered there offer and got $5k plus 2 extra days vacation.

When a shit head neighbor's dogs come in to your yard multiple times and kills and maims your niece's State Grand Champion rabbits and all of your laying hens, you take care of things.

My current company didn't know the true salary of a calibration engineer so the first offer was really low, I countered with the CAT offer back and forth a few times and increased my salary and benefits a lot from the first offer. The position is a good fit for me and for the company. Glad I left CAT when I did with the position they are in currently...
A match or increase in salary is the goal, just don't ask for too much and do research for comparable salary at similar positions. unless you just hate your current job and are willing to take a hit.
