Important

Probably an e-clip, goofy plastic bushing clip like clutch master pushrods use, or a cotter pin or something. What year is it again? I'll poke around and see if I can find anything.

The Ftwofiddy is driving me nuts! Sometimes the steering is so bad I am afraid to drive it. It wanders all over the road. Sometimes it feels as if there is a "catch". I will correct an over steer and I will feel it in the steering wheel as it centers and it will over correct. Then it will ho away and be fine but still wanders a bit. I changed the tie rod and drag link and unfortunately the problem did not go away.
Could it be the axle joints? If one or both of them are in just the right position I would think such a condition could exist. The man lock outs have been engauged for at least 60, 000 moles so I can not unlock them to check.
I could also be ball joints.
It wouldn't hurt to rebuild the whole front end.
There is also a steering gear box adjustment I have read about.
Any thoughts?

yeah it doesnt snap on...they prolly started the f up on it when they rebuilt the transmission...

i bet its a mofo to change the cable...

ken its a 98 5.9 zj

mac 'zip tie might be the more reasonable semi permanent fix' gyvr

rosco had the steering box adjusted on a alignment after similar complaints...

i dont hear him complaining about it as much anymore

mac 'i would get that front end unlocked tho' gyvr

check the ujoints in the intermediate steering shaft. I have had them go bad 2-3 times in my MJ and every time it acts just like that.

Wouldn't bet on axle ujoints, since if the wheel is turned, they flex back and forth as they spin, so you'd get really rapid binding feeling as you drove.

If it's not the intermediate shaft I think you are on track with the steering box adjustment, but saginaw style boxes typically need to be removed from the truck and adjusted on the bench to avoid them randomly seizing up when they come up to operating temp and the parts expand. Ask old_man how that ends.

I'll see what I can figure out.

Alright, looking at the parts catalog diagram, it looks like redheep is probably right. Little ball joint thing, cable end clips over it. If the round retention clip thing that slides over the cable end isn't there (or is bent/damaged/not tight enough) it would certainly fall off the ball post easily. Probably can swipe one of those clips off any throttle cable, it's likely the same size ball and clip.

I use 4wheel drive almost every day so I never thought about unlocking the hubs until this started.
I will but a big pair of channel locks on them and see what happens.
Come or bleed bitch.
The whole front end needs to be rebuilt anyway.

TONS of forum posts and articles about the hubs on the front of the ford axles on f250 and f350's. I found them all when I was trying to get my stuck pieces out of the d44. I wouldn't use excessive force unless you're ready to rebuild them with warn parts. They break, get stuck inside the hub and are generally a pain in the ass.

I replaced the steering box on my last 250 due to it being as cheap to just replace it than to take the time to tear down the stock box, put seals in it and hope it worked...mine also has a very minor bent shaft in it from a minor ditch experience. I also replaced the steeing joint and it took care of all the problems. The new owner has it as a daily driver and it is pushing 260K now!
