Important

from what i've read...yes...though im not 100% sure right now. still reading/researching.

yeah, I'd probably figure out what family it shares a pattern with and then start looking at what the bigger motors in that family had bolted up.

I don't think the BA-10 is too terrible, it just should't have ever been put behind a 4.2/4.0

it may work fine behind a little 80 HP diesel.

hmm...

so the reason im asking is because i have a peugueot 2.3l turbo diesel that i might pickup for pocket change, but it might not be a simple swap. i was thinking about trying to drop it into a renix xj or an mj. its currently mated to a ba 10/5...my hope was that the bellhousings were separate, but the bolt patterns on the tranny side were the same...then you could mate an ax15 with the peugeot bellhousing, but i figured it wouldn't be that easy. i suppose i could run a peugeot 4x4 drivetrain for a little while until it blows up...this is all a very theoretical at this point. however, since the peugeot diesel motors were bullet proof (unlike the trannys) i still might look into how to make it work. its a fully mechanical diesel so making it run would be easy...adapting it to a jeep drivetrain and adapting the motor mounts may make it tricky though. these motors aren't terribly hard to find parts from, and they were used in a similar sized truck in europe. i'll be doing some digging until i get back to see if it would even work. if so, it could be a dd project
ahhh. I see where you are going with this... depending on the hp/tq numbers on that 2.3 it might be fine in front of a ba10/5.

Also, in my parts catalogs I see some interesting things:

Diesel bellhousing 87-90: 5300 1164 - NOT the same bellhousing pattern as a 2.5 (which shares the 60deg GM V6 pattern) unfortunately
Transmission for those years behind a diesel was the AX4 or AX5. "Transmission case, extension & miscellaneous parts four cyl. gas or diesel engine 4 or 5 speed trans, aisin model AX4 or AX5 Figure 21M-200"

So basically I think if you can get your hands on a bellhousing from a 2.1TD XJ/MJ with the AX4 or AX5, AND the bellhousing pattern is the same between the 2.1 and 2.3 (no idea if it is or not), you should be able to put it in front of a bargain basement AX5. Still not an AX15, but better, at least. It's a pity the AX4/5 and 15 never shared a trans to bellhousing pattern, else you could simply bolt an AX15 onto the back of that bellhousing. Even so, assuming the bolt holes don't interfere too badly and the input shaft splines go far enough down to engage fully, you could turn a custom pilot bearing bushing that extends the pilot bearing out of the end of the crankshaft, install a pilot bearing in it, then put an adapter plate between the 2.1 (and hopefully 2.3) AX4/5 bellhousing and the AX15.

the 2.1td in the xj/mj is a renault no? not a peugeot...i'm trying to find if there is a difference in the transmission bolt pattern...

the other option is to find someone to machine an adapter between the peugeot bellhousing and the ax15 tranny...from what i read, the input shaft on the ax15 is 1" longer so having an adapter in there somewhere might actually be possible...

sorry for all of the nerd in the important thread. i can take this to pm's...but i think im going to be researching this all day today while i sit here in rehearsal. ken...shoot me a pm if you would like to be involved in some more nerdspeak...manche, i might shoot you a pm also...

oh I'm an idiot, yeah the 2.1 is a renault.

I almost think you should just start a thread in Other Tech or on facebook, my inbox is damn near full and this info could definitely be of use to others at some point.

The 5.9 zj is plenty fast considering you can get one for about 2K

The book on my dads is around $4K. It's flawless though with 101k.

I could get it for about $3K.

Still don't know if its fast enough. If you've ever had the chance to ride in an SRT-8 Jeep you would understand.

Probably all a pipe dream anyway. She will end up in a mini van or a Toyota Venza or some other equally boring kid wagon.

You seem to have more than your fair share of wheel bearing issues...

I just end up getting vehicles where that failure is common. I learned how to do it on my Malibu. I got cheapo units first, got Timken's when those failed a year later. Will never get another brand other then Timken.

Kbb says mine is around 4k with 231k on it...

one with 160k recently sold on pirate...all stock...for $3500 to $4k.

mac 'even worn out its got some go' gyvr

Anyone know if 89 and 97 shift solenoids (2nd gear) are interchangeable?
My jeep isnt shifting into 2nd without some 4000rpm persuasion in the morning now. After the first shift its fine...

Guys on speedfreaks.net post cl listings almost daily for niners for 1500 - 2500. I got my first one a few years ago for 2800 and the current one for 2000. Just got to be able to negotiate I guess.

there are two shift solenoids for shifting and 1 for the torque converter lockup... part numbers 8350 4043 (2 req.) and 8350 4044 (1 req.) on the 87-94 trans. They fit 94 transmissions part number 53007997.

95-99 use 4797 402 (2 req.) and 4797 403 (1 req.) The 95-96 years specify "with transmissions part number 4810178,4810179"

I can look up 00/01 but don't have those catalogs in front of me right now.

I should note that the shift solenoids aren't the same part number - the torque lockup one is one of the "2 required" ones, the shift solenoids are the "1 required" and the other "2 required". Don't ask me why.

That being said, I'm not sure what the difference would be.
