It depends on the treatment methods used for your particular city and what you want to store your water in. Example... If your water is chlorinated... stainless water containers are a no-no. Chlorine is corrosive to a goodly number of metals.

Dessicant.. is moisture absorbent material. You can get it any good sporting goods store for food storage or for your gun locker.

Thanks, I never thought about this and do not use insulin, but will not do well without my meds either. Lovely...

I get pissed at the bookworm type engineers that don't like to get their hands dirty. If you have never used a wrench in your life, you shouldn't be designing parts that requires a wrench to be built/repaired.

I am heating the house with wood this winter and live in a house that looks abandoned, all I have to do to bug in is lock the doors, cover the windows on the first floor, and turn out the lights.

My neighbor on one side is a marine who just got back from afghanistan, on the other side is a well armed redneck from florida, and to the north is a short haul trucker. I am on decent or good terms with all of them and none of them stand any kind of bullshit on their properties.

As long as we lose power before the local gas stations run out of gas I have enough knowhow to get fuel when I need it in a SHTF situation. I intend to bug in, wait for most of the population to either starve or go elsewhere, and then set up shop in my amish paradise. I really do need to finish my generator and maybe get some surplus solar panels though.

That being said, hyperinflation, a fuel crisis, or famine are far more likely than a true SHTF type disaster. Hyperinflation would wipe out my remaining student loans and I like to think I have enough skills and stuff to barter for food so I dare say I would do fine. A fuel crisis would hit me pretty bad (depending on how far my commute ends up being) and famine would really suck, fortunately I am betting on hyperinflation.
 
I know way too many people that freaked out over Y2K, you couldn't buy a gen set in town, all sold out. Now 12 yrs later they all gotta play the game all over again. Wonder if those 12 yr old gen sets still run, lol.

I don't know about cheap, stores seem to prey on this stuff & raise their prices around here.
 
I store my stuff in my basement. Google long term water storage. There is ton's of info out there. The CDC even has info on it.

As far as IF or when the crap hits the fan. I'm only going to worry until my kid is home from school. I live in the middle of nowhere and the largest city "Green Bay" is an hour and fifteen minutes to the south. I also have an in ground storage shelter that is 10x12 with only a door going out to the side of the hill.

I do not dwell on the Mayan crap. Y2K I was in the military. My family and I know if the crap hits the fan everyone is to get to my place bringing food and firearms.

When 12/12/2012 passes I'm going to be buying the unused generators. Been eying the new Honda generator.:yelclap:
 
I am not worried about an EMP, I am more worried about when the "urbanites" welfare checks do not cash.

I have lead a "prepper's" life style for more than 20 years.
When Lar came into the picture 10 years ago, it took some doing to get her on board, but we are moderately prepped right now.
When we finally get to out new place we will step it up a notch or two.

I was involved in the Patriot Movement back in the mid 90's until some (most) carried it too far and became whack jobs. But I did learn a lot about prepping and survival skills.
My Ex wife and I used to teach wilderness survival course in northern Wisconsin. It was fun.

If you want some real down to earth information read anything by John Wesley Rawles, he also has survival blog.com.
Just be careful because, like I said, there are some real nut jobs out there.

EDIT<When we first started prepping, it was frowned upon by the Feds and they were actually going to impose laws against "hording". My how things change.>
 
500+ head of cattle on grass and natural water...I think we will have some food "just in case" and typically over 1500 gallons of ruby red in the barrels and planty of gas. We have gen sets that run off the PTO of a tractor as well as diesel powered big 220 units. Food and power is not to worrrysome around here....and that is not even counting the 4800 head of hogs that we would have to "deal with" if the electric feeding systems went down....who wants a pork chop? :D the urbanites are too far away to even remotely worry me...for those of you that have been to our farms, you know it is way the hell away from any big city. :farmer:

Ever seen "The Crazies"? I'm too far out as well to worry about urbanites but I wouldn't worry about that either. That would be a hay day for the well armed hillbillies to have an excuse to cut down on the 47%
