Important

I watched Extreme4x4 today. Last part of a Cherokee build. Over $5k in parts, then they added a 8.8 (with drums :( ) and an airlocker, 4.88s, and CM axles with a bearing retainer kit. This is their "budget wheeler" for "mild trails".

Pffft. If I put over $5K in suspension/drivetrain parts on a rig, that machine wouldn't be doing forest roads :D

But not MadXJ's....

Just concerned with your safety. A battery box, with very few exceptions, is not a open spiral wound battery.

!!!1 A battery box does more than prevent spills, they prevent anything from coming in contact with the battery or battery posts. NHRA requires them whether gel or wet dielectric battery is used. I see SCCA, it varies by class. In Solo: Wet=box, Gel=no box, but they mandate a cover over the positive post.

I guess if it was me building a rig, a tank would be as far from a potential ignition source as possible. But that's me. I know 1st hand how powerful a few fumes in a confined space can be

I guess that I've been wheeling a time bomb that has passed tech in everything that I have ever run it in the last 6 years.

mac 'and this is an improvement' gyvr

Why is that allot?

I have over that just in my front.

Come to think of it, the total cost, including rig, before the 8.8 was $5K. Still doesn't match the cost of your front end. What's up there which counts up to $5K?

The changes made to that rig were a 4.5" lift, steering parts, disconnects, SYE, wheels, and 33" tires. That accounted for most of the parts. A $1K cost 4.5" lift kit? Really?
Interestingly, no armor... Not even rock rails.

The 8.8, locker, and gears were an added 1.5K, and done so you could "Drive it to the trail". Like you couldn't do that before ;)

No labor was figured into the build.

I guess my point was that the Extreme4x4 rig, is probably capable of fairly aggressive trails even before the 8.8 upgrade happened. I have seen stock rigs do incredible things with a good driver, and with just a few inexpensive mods, an XJ will darn near perform miracles. I'm not saying it was ready to take on a Black or 10 Rated trail, but certainly capable of the trails at the Badlands.

Rew - You're trying to weld two round pieces together logitudinally. That's pretty difficult given the radius of the tube and how the angle changes. You might have better results practicing 90 degree welds on square stock. I've found that prepping the metal and having the right settings on your welder go a lot farther than your technique.

i watched a video on you tube that said welding the tube like that helped get the hang of how you hold and angle the welder. i dont know it was pretty difficult.i still got to find some flat scrap to practice with.

Is that the one we were supposed to get the plug for?
An hour on the phone to that guy and all we got was a microscopic shot of a NAXJA sticker on the front windshield.

Brad, Fat Jesus and Flex just pulled out of the drive. It was a good time fueled by cheese, bacon, booze and a lot of farm travels. That camper was a bitch to load into a dually since the jacks would not clear the duals, but we managed to get it in there w/o too much damage. :D

That's pretty lame. They damn near orally please other vendors and organizations. I don't know how much those guys pay or talk to the producers or what, but you'd think they would easily be able to say something like "And if you have a Cherokee or Commanche that you plan on modding and don't know where to start, the good folks at NAXJA.org can answer almost any question you can ever have."

Can now finally join 97-01 XJ owners club. Bought a 99 w 178k everything works, clean floor boards, little rust in back rocker for $1900. New tires, power drivers seat, overhead console, $200 Clarion head unit, all new A/C plumbing, and factory tow package.

Pretty stoked right now, did not go to bed till 3am going over it. Needs u-joints, steering linkage, and front brakes.

Nice! That's two of us in the last 4 days!

96's are were its at, roomier interior, and all the same options/safety features as 97+.

I've had 2 96's and liked both more than my 01, especially when it comes to engine electronics

Don't know about that ...

It wouldn't surprise me though. They were after info, and found it was easier to call someone.

In my experience, most of these performance shows and mags are advertisements. The idea is to show people how easy it is, and oh, BTW, that part that makes it so wonderful is made by... I got a chuckle at the end, where he said with a straight face that 4Wheel Parts has all these parts as a bundled for you at a discount price.

Really....? Really, dude.....? Glad you missed the point worrying about a typo. It was dinner time, the table was set and I was trying to bang out the post before going to the table. Gimme some slack.

So yesterday I ripped the hitch off that black xj yesterday. The whole underside of the unibody off to. Anybody else deal with that? And yes I have a video of me ripping it off yesterday lol. Just have to get to a computer so I can upload them.
