ive been polishing this turd for the last month making it less of a death trap. every nut and bolt has been gone over and marked to make it race ready. today was supposed to be fun day. try different tire pressures, try different tires, and let our team of drivers get some seat time, a feel for the car. i know she looks like death... because it is. it was the first baja car made by our school and is SERIOUSLY out of the rule book. but a lot of TLC has been put into making it run and drive right. its the only car that doesnt sit at full droop with a rides in it and lists as it should, transfering weight, through turns. it is our lightest and fastest car by far. like i said... today was drive day. after playing for an hour, we got some food, threw some larger tires on it, and went back at it.

after about 15 minutes of hot lapping around the parking lot, the input shaft to the gear box explodes, the secondary goes flying off, and the belt gets flung 100'... this... is a serious problem, we depart for michigan tech in 2 weeks. the one above it is off of another car, and is bent. im going to have to go to a polaris dealer monday and see how many arms and legs its going to cost for a new shaft... a new shaft that will have to have splines turned down and then a keyway cut... into a hardened steal shaft. great, another one.

The front hitch is dual purpose, it is to be used as a recovery point but also to be used for a Sprint car push bumper. If I push sprint cars on the dirt track, not only do I get into the race for free, but also get a little money.

Flex, I might try to come the long way home and get it on Monday.

Let me know and I'll set the stuff out and give you my address. I'll probably be at work but the stuff will be safe outdoors. I'll slide the hitch under the bimmer.

oi I got a new boss a couple weeks ago. Seems like a really nice guy but lately he's gotten a little shady. My machine is not complicated to run but if you don't know what you're doing it can go south in a hurry. So Thursday he asks the team leader 3 times if one of the temporary employees can run it on second shift, the team leader said No we need to train him. so Friday I come in. ran some parts in the morning and all was well. do some other stuff and come back to my machine. Ran about 40 and i hear EEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTT, the stones on the spindle were completely gone and that doesn't just happen in a month. So i change it out and set it up and we go on our way. So last night the idiot lets him run it again. Tried to save 4 hours of overtime and now its gonna cost him at least 8 hours on top of the $700 for the tooling that got ruined two nights in a row......:roflmao:

It will be even funnier if the parts he made don't pass QA or worse, make it out into the market defective and wreck someone's day.

Penny wise, pound foolish.

Edit: oh yeah, walt, that shaft holds the second pulley assembly for the cvt right? Is there anything supporting the outer end of the shaft or is it essentially single shear? Maybe you caused metallurgical problems grinding the last shaft down or didn't radius the end of the ground are, so it broke there? Can you add a support bearing at the end or set it up so it doesn't stress the shaft like that? Lots of side loading on the pulley/shaft from the belt as I understand it... we had to brace the shit out of the setup on the vehicle I work on, because people don't like it when the cvt flies off their $280k road driveable airplane and strands them.

He texted the team leader and apologized. He said we were right. Uh, yeah we know we are. Hopefully he learned his lesson. I don't mind the overtime but I prefer my machine to not be broken and to be ran by qualified people, not the guy who started two weeks ago...

a text? seems professional.

sounds like the guy is a little ambitious... and its working against him.

yes, its a cvt type centrifugal clutch setup. no, its essentially single sheer. seems to be the prefered method. problem is that the primary and secondary have to be completely enclosed. this protects during failure and people from putting their hands in moving parts. so a support of some sort may be difficult, and not worth the weight.

we hadnt been into the case at all, it was going to get some fresh fluid this week and that was that. she is torn down now, and the shaft looks like a home brew setup... the polaris shaft had been parted off and drilled, then someone installed a bought/machined shaft with keyway with an interference fit, and welded it. there is your stress riser. haha.

Shopping round for some parts and of course no single dealer has all the parts I need... I hate having to buy from multiple sources only to try and figure out what came from where later 'if' something goes wrong... Looks like I'm starting another binder of paper so I can track it later...

Its easier to text here. Its loud so we have to wear earplugs on the shop floor and you're right, he's very ambitious.

If you don't have the capability to text, you won't get an answer from 90% of my Marines. They grew up doing it and it's the only way they communicate. They still get face time with me for various reasons, but even phone calls are rare. It's a different generation.

Red 'my snco's said the same thing about me' heep

At RIT (when I was there on the team) we have never broken a input shaft, what clutch setup are you using? the input looks a little small for the loads the clutch would be seeing. we used a splined team secondary for years, the weakest part of the tranny should be the chain by design.

when texting 1st started i was a "nah im not gonna text people. ill call them if i need to" type

that changed as did times and the phones doing the job. i can have important conversations with multiple people at the same time, all while doing something else.

imo at this point texting has become a time saver and very useful tool. even at work my guys may not be able to find me if im running all around or going to the bathroom or something. and every second they spend looking for me to tell me to order a parrt is a dollar out of their pocket. now i got them texting me. saves us both time.

now i dont like when i wifes boss sends her text that have all the shortcuts in it. like "wat time r u gunna b here?!?"

that shit is unprofessional.

You said Polaris. That's the problem.

I don't talk to my dispatchers or bosses on the phone at all anymore unless it's too long and complicated to text.

They don't talk to us either. I like it that way. I'm not a people person.

Well I actually picked up a new to me Jeep Thursday night. Ended up getting a 98 ZJ limited with the 5.2 v8. So far i'm really liking it. Its actually really clean except for one little spot on the driver rocker panel.

I'm starting to think that the gas gauge is messed up tho. It won't read less than half a tank. If I put gas in it it will go up but won't go below half tank. Anybody else had a problem like this?

Looks nice ben. It may be the fuel pump...I just happen to have a brand new one in box if you want to make a deal.

I just took a deposit on whitey. Guy coming to buy it Monday.

It's amazing what a good ad with good pics, spelling and grammar will sell in less than 12 hours on Craigslist.

mac 'it doesn't take much either' gyvr
