I would make it, is it a safe place to shoot guns (as in one direction has no one within 2-3 miles and maybe woods)?
That is what I would do if I were you
Although with already saggy rear leaf springs, you might want to do a two inch lift shackle
Matt, I had the same problem.
I used a piece of 5X1 square tubing I had laying around and did the same basic thing. My tire partially sits on the bumper and I used hockey pucks to space out the stock side bumpers so they line up with the tire.
It seems to work, though I am worried about the long term affects of 50+ pounds hanging on the gate. The YJs gate and hinges were beat to hell and back from carrying OS tires around for years.
I have been thinking about adding a Best Top Tire Carrier outfit. It bolts to the body, and to the gate, and takes much of the weight of the tire on to it. A guy up here has one and does not have hinge issues. It does not impede the use of the gate at all.

2-3 miles?! Bringing the Barrett .50 cal with ya?I would make it, is it a safe place to shoot guns (as in one direction has no one within 2-3 miles and maybe woods)?
Yep... that's the same method I use, I'm pretty sure he covered the grease and "put the cap onto the trunnion and tap it in while holding the cross up" methods. I like to install the first cap on an axis too far (so there's plenty of space for the clip to go on) then flip it over, partially slide the cross back out of that cap (but not enough to let the needle bearings fall over) then spin the opposing cap onto the now-sticking-out trunnion and hold the cross about midway between the two caps as I tap the second cap in. That way, you never lose a needle bearing.I worked out this method to avoid the needle bearing issue:
Add some grease to caps.
Insert joint so that the spindle is exposed on one side.
Spin cap on that side and while putting pressure on the joint to keep the x-joint in the cap, tap the cap into place with a light hammer.
Expose enough clip channel area to install clip, and install the clip.
Put it back in press and push the new cap partially though so the opposite spindle is exposed on the other side.
Spin on that cap, put it back in press and press it back until the previously installed clip hits the ear.
Install the Clip on the side you just put on.
Sometimes the joint is tight. I fix this by smacking the end of the ear sharply with a hammer and twisting the joint to make sure it moves freely.
I don't use u-joints with fittings in the middle for wheel joints due to access problems.
lately I have taken to using a method I read about here to prevent clips from spinning off on the trail. I put a tack weld where the cap meets the ear on the outside surface of the shaft. Just a 30 second tap with a wire feed. I have noticed an improvement in clip retention when using this method. Just an extra step installing and removing the cap.
I'll try that trick on the spare shafts I got. However I'm not to sure it would have worked on these puppies. I found a coworker with a 12ton press, and it was all it could do to get them loose. We actually exploded one cap into about sex pieces when it finely let go!! Took a rat tail file to the bores to clean them up a bit, and the new joint slid in with ease. Literately took less than ten minuets to put it back together.Stop using constant pressure before you bend an ear.
Here's the trick:
I have used this method to get rusted in place factory ujoints out of 200+ thousand mile rust belt axleshafts 20-25 years old. No sweat.

Yeah, 875 sq. ft. and one bathroom wasn't cutting it. New place will be 1900 sq. ft. with 2 bathrooms, a 2 car garage on 2 wooded acres with a small pond.
Would you and Kim consider hosting a small gathering?
Dunno if I'd ever be able to make it, but what the hell.
If you get the house, that is.

i think my place is about 900sqft also, i only have 2 kids though. (cant remember how many you have) what you're getting sounds nice!
nothing worse than going back to work knowing that an unorganized, forgetful, bare minimum attitude, screwball, has been doing your job for 8 days. ugh, only half way through his mess
