Important

Doesn't sound like you have a choice. If your policy is a 1500 policy then that's that. 1500 renters insurance seems pointless to me. Mine was 15,000 and I had pictures of all of my rooms an garage.

I spent a day in east st louis, nice town.....

I literally laughed out loud when i read this ..

i lived there for a couple of years while my daughter was a baby . no way in hell i would have stayed there when school age started .

it was one of the worst places ive stayed.
Its right up there with Gary indiana , North Vegas , and the east side of Pueblo Co, and el paso tx /Juarez mexico .. LOL !

Juarez wins (or loses) I wouldnt stay there after dark .

(also need to reread the S.F. policy we have because that is B.S. )

They're currently offering $1500 (which I told them was a slap in the face) under my renters policy.

i hate to break it to you but they got you there.... the tools should have had their own policy being so valuable. the renters is a blanket policy and it has allowances for certain amounts in each category. mine is 10k total buts thats furniture tv's all my shit. any specific area where something exceeds the renters policy amt i draw up a separate policy. without delving into detail my firearms are only covered up to a certain amount, the moment i exceeded that amount tied up in my guns a had a separate policy drawn up. because no matter how much i yell and scream that theyre worth, under the renters i only get amount x, and im boned on my gun investments. i also have separate policies for my computers as well as her engagement ring.

its tedious to set all this stuff up but should the worst happen it keeps me from losing the value of the stuff, my livelihood as a college student relies on being able to re-convert stuff into cash value.

Yup, I tried to get local dealers to give me the price I am buying them from cali for and no one could come close, they were all at least $40/tire.

sears does a price match and we have an account through work, i just order all my tires through them

$1,500 is the tool limit on the policy?

No, the Policy has a $1500 limit for Business related Items. My renters policy is for $15,000. They are classifying my tools as business items and not personal items because I was a dip$h3t and said I used a couple special tools for a demo in a class I teach. (They had asked for a description of what/how I teach since my past employment was a mechanic.)

Understand I am in no way trying to be offensive..... But 10k worth of tools should have had their own policy. It would have been hard for insurance to find a way around that. give an insurance company interpretation and they will run with it.... I try to cut out as much interpretation as possible.

When I got the policy, I told the underling of my Agent that I have approx ~10k in tools, thus the 15k limit. I'm new to this game, last 6yrs I was covered under parents insurance since I was a full time student. I had no idea to specifically ask if these tools were considered business items or not and if they'd be covered particularly since I didn't even know there were such things as 'business items'. I knew I had bought tools and I owned them.

I did have a rather large amount of computer gear a few years ago that I did have covered under a separate policy, as the standard policy wouldn't cover about 60% of it.

Realistically, most of us, especially BMW mechanics, probably have rather more than $1,500 in tools alone.

Anyone that has worked as a mechanic for more than 2 years has probably over double that... I'm just frustrated that when I stated what I had, I was not informed that these items would not be covered under the policy, instead it was discussed and the policy reflects that the cost of the tools was taken into effect.

Went to a local junk yard, they had a 96 ZJ with cloth power seats (both fronts). They want 35 each seat. Could I use the power part of the seat (partially or fully)?

can they not seperate those speciality tools and the remaining non work related tools? there are ways to address this, but nothing I would post over an open public forum.

Cheese "get your cookie too" Man

Yup. They can still give you a ticket. You'll be fine in Moab most likely. It's the freeway before Moab you'll have to be careful.

How can they give you a ticket for no flares when you don't live in Utah and therefore don't have to comply to their standards? That makes no sense. I will be courteous to the officer if I do get pulled over but I don't see how a ticket for that would stick.

I left a message with my agent discussing something along these lines would decrease the chances of a lawyer getting involved...

All you need is power.

Wonder if the power port would be a good enough source to tap into? How does that work for the moving front and back?

"take it up with the judge" is what you will hear.

They know you live multiple states away and will probably just pay it rather than come back or hire a lawyer for a court hearing.

Honestly I would invest in (it's technically accurate in this case!) a set of TJ flares and a handful of the biggest bulldog clips you can get. Bulldog clip the flares on when you leave the state, take em off when you get to Moab.

same reason that people on a motorcycle have to obey helmet laws even if their home state doesn't have them.

You'll get some slack around Moab because they know we're there spending money, elsewhere, not so much.
