Important

My 4840 should be out of the shop next week w/ a complete inframe OH and a new turbo...should last another 30 years! Hell, I may even give the ol' girl some love and a new coat of paint :D

BS, real farmers don't maintain or paint anything.

A friend was driving a grain truck last year, no tags, no insurance, lost a kingpin on the front axle and spilled soybeans alll over the road. It's a good thing "farm trucks" get a pretty wide berth on tags/insurance around here. It could have gotten really expensive when the state trooper showed up.

Reminds me... "real Vermonters don't wash their trucks, it loosens the rust."

My father in law believe is keeping all equipment under roof when not in use, but he rearely even washes anything. I on the other hand wash every piece of equipment after use and grease it before it is put up or goes back in to service. His repair and down time is about 5X what mine is. I am weird in a sense that I have to travel in a clean car, and I dont start any crop season without clean equipment and everything ahving a good once over done on it.

MoDOT puts the hammer down on us for our grain trucks...no escaping them in my parts. They are usually patroling all around the elevators amd they LOVE to use their portable scales, died diesel testers and creepers!

I've never seen an ODOT truck in my area. I can pretty much guarantee you that all of the grain trucks and such around here are running farm diesel straight from the storage tanks.

They don't know the meaning of paint in these parts, and it doesn't get maintenance unless it's broken. Even at that I've seen plenty of "inventive" fixes to farm machinery. You should have seen the welding done to a combine head I saw. I was like "No F'ing way you're welding that up", ubt they did, and it worked, at least long enough to finish taking corn off. I'd lay odds that head still hasn't been properly repaired, and no one is going to give it a second thought until it fails again, in the middle of taking crops off of course.

FWIW, when you hit a big stump in the middle of your corn field with a combine, it will fawk something up. Needless to say there was much anger towards whomever just dumped a stump in the middle of a field of corn and it couldn't be seen.

MI's DOT hits the cherry haulers pretty hard. I'm sorta surprised that my family hasn't gotten popped for overweight. I think the only reason we haven't is a relatively new truck & trailer. There's a lot of rusty equipment out there.

Dad's planters & harvesters almost never saw rain, at the first hint, they were headed for the shop. The exception was the combine in the fall for shelling corn. You don't have much choice sometimes when you're picking 300+ acres with a 2 row head. Maintenance.... not enough. Equipment never got washed, but it did get greased and generally maintained. Tillage equipment generally sat out.

I've always wondered why anybody would leave expensive equipment out in the weather, though. There's a relatively new JD combine that's sat out all winter 3 miles from here. I don't want to think what the inside of the machine looks like right now.

we burnt off a few crop fields last night and called in the fire to the local sheriffs dept (protocol for buring in our county)....apparently the person taking the call "forgot" to notify the RFD and here they all came in their glory...lights a going, sirens blowing etc...when they got to the field we told them it was a controlled burn and that we had called it in. One volunteer told us we owed a minimum of $500 for them being called out...I showed them my call log on my phone and told them to take it up w/ the Sheriffs dept. I also mentioned I paid my fire dues and it would not cost me sh*t for their services.

Cheese "gonna light up another 300 acres tonight if the wind is right" Man

hmmm, how far do you live from me again??? May have to come up for this.

3 miles on the bike, got to get back into the habit since I haven't rode since July or so of last year.

It's so rural out this way that you can drive from the field to the grainery and not hit a state highway. Most of the time.

depends on how fast you drive! :D Will be dropping the first match around 5:30 and it should burn a few hours. The wind will def help things out this evening.....good thing I have a few friends coming down to help as well...I may need to catch a ride back home with them if I have a few too many beverages.

All this talk about farming reminds me that i been wanting to plant a garden for a couple years now, small 3x10 foot just tomato's, hot peppers, bacon and what ever else i can make salsa out of

Rudy do what i did. i convinced Brianne that she should take up gardening and the yard in general as a hobby. now as long as i let her buy gardening stuff, she will do all of it. she dose not know this yet but that includes mowing the grass in my book.

I'm gonna open up a can of worms here and ask what everyone runs for trailer tires. The 'new' camper has worn out and weather checked car tires on it, 1 of which is a different size . I'm going to put proper trailer tires on it, but have been finding mixed reviews on them. They are 225/75/15 and I'm going to go with load range D. Carlisle? GY Marathon? Maxxis? Kenda? I can get the Carlisle and GY locally, which is important for replacement purposes. Seems like most people prefer the GYs over the Carlisles, but wanted to ask here also.

Wait, $500.00 to come to a fire!?
1)That is what property taxes pay for!
2)Around here in the rural areas, the "Jolly Vollies" come from miles around every time there is a smoke cloud in the sky! They will come from 40 miles away if the smoke cloud is high enough, they all have their own 'fire gear' and they would pay to fight a fire!

I also mentioned I paid my fire dues and it would not cost me sh*t for their services. [/QUOTE]
See #1) above

Sadly, taxes (at least around here) are not enough to keep the services up. Property taxes here in Indiana is now capped at 1% for residential homes. Cities and counties are losing millions that they used to have. I know at one point, the city FD was planning on collecting fees for runs (from insurance companies) to help offset the losses they have had.

we had a party/mud bog and burnt an old camper, we were a bit drunk and decided to start the fire before dark, with the use of tranny fluid. FD came and tried to charge us $500 too. the big f-u check is still in the mail. :D They also said they were going to charge us with arson, I guess burning anything that is not in the form of a tree is illeagal.

Seen my Jeeps evil step brother.....I want it....

Also, if I win the lottery, I am going to build one of these.
