I would suggest changing the minimum serch characters to three.

the search database would then have to be rebuilt, which would take a lot longer than 30 seconds......

And it would put more of a load on the server, thus slowing things down, and people would complain about that, but there wouldn't be a "Guide to making run faster" that would solve everything.
