I want a Jeep again...

Long time, no post...

Anyway, I've been away for awhile...got rid of my XJ last year and have horribly regretted it. I want to get back into an XJ but my current car has me in negative equity up to my arse, but it's becoming an ongoing problem nowadays and most of the time that negative can be rolled over into the new loan...

I had a 98, and the two I have my eyes on are a 99 and 00. I know the negative equity sucks, but my current loan has me paying $530 a month until 2012. I found this cool website where it calculates the payment when you factor in rolling over the negative equity. http://www.bankrate.com/brm/negative-auto-loan-calculator.aspThe XJ I'm looking at (00) I figure will cost me over $100 less a month and the loan will be 2 years shorter, although the resale of the XJ won't be there, but that doesn't worry me.

So, trading back to an XJ...is it worth it? (I currently have a VW Passat W8...very nice car but parts are very expensive although the gas cost wouldn't be too far off from what I pay now.) Thoughts?

BTW, here are the prospects:

 TIA,

Jeremy

It depends on what the negative equity is. If we're talking 4 grand...it's still not a good idea.

The truth is that you probably have a nice, comfortable, reliable car (and being that new I'm sure it has a warranty) and while it isn't a jeep, trading out of it will make you pay two times what those XJ's are worth.

I don't think I'd drive a $15k or $20k XJ, and that's what you'd be doing.

trade your car in for something cheaper with good gas mileage.....that way you'll still have a good car and lower payments.

then go and buy yourself an old XJ for $500 and beat the crap out of it until you start getting more money again.

That's not cool. The best thing he could do is ride out the payent till the negative equity is gone (i had to do that a while back). Even if he wanted to, i don't think there's a bank that would be willing to roll that much negative equity into a 6-7 year old vehicle. The only way you could prevent getting screwed if there was an accident is if you had GAP protection...no bank is going to do that on a 6-7 year old SUV that you're more than $4k upside down on to begin with.

Edit: Think about it. You're talking about getting into a $400+ payment for a 00' XJ. I just got out of a $428 payment on a 2005 Volkswagen because i'd had enough. You won't enjoy driving it and everyone you know will think you've lost your marbles...sorry, just trying to be real here. If you really want an XJ, go pick up a ~97 XJ beater for $3k like i did.

WOW, 2012 ? WTF did you buy, If I was you I'd get a second job and pay that sob off. Geezeus, thats insane.... I paid my 98 off in 48 months for $400 a month, put $2k down, actually I paid it off in 40 months I just stuck like an extra $50 or $100 month when I could afford it, that added up pretty quick.

Something worth about 40k-50k I'd imagine.

Spend $1000 for an early 90's XJ and then privately sell your money hog for all you can get, take out a small loan to cover any shortfall, and then drive the $1000 XJ until that other loan is paid off.

Soon you will have a paid for XJ and no car loans. Then take the money you were spending on paying off that other car loan and sock it in the bank. Pretty soon you have $5000 in the bank, and you can take that and pay cash for a $5000 (with no payments) car and have 2 fully paid for vehicles.

I have 4 Jeeps in my driveway right now. I haven't had a car payment since 2001. I paid off my 1996 ZJ in a lump sum when I saved enough and I paid cash for both my XJs and my 1994 ZJ.

Money sure stacks up quickly when you aren't paying on loans!

Yea, about right, gotta be nukin futz to spend that kind of money on a CAR that becomes less valuable every day it exists.

:sunshine: Aren't YOU one big F'in ray of sunshine...I guess I should have known better to come back here to get some worthwhile advice, instead I have to put up with the flamers. Thanks a lot for the help! :thumbdn: I guess we all can't be perfect like you...

Incidentially, at least my Passat will be worth something when I've paid it off as opposed to an XJ...guess I'll take my own advice.

Great help. See ya around. :bs:

Might wanna take a breath and relax a bit. I do not read any of that as flames... rather just something you probably already know, but did not want to read.

Being upside down does suck... I was there once, found an easy way out... a lease. Well, that was not the brightest move I ever made... but Hey! The leased ZJ went to Moab half a dozen times, Santiago's Revenge in So Cal, and a few other nice trails. It was a bit beat up when they "got it back". :)

In the 9+ years on this board I have NEVER flamed anyone, questioned their sanity, mores, morals, judgement, linage, taste in beer, women, music, pulled a few legs, tweaked some noses, but I don't ever remember flaming anyone....
