I picked up an mj today

I agree , if those buckets are factory you might want to reupholster them .
Those are rare and easy / cheap to redo .

Indeed. If you end up swapping in different seats, I'll buy the MJ buckets.

I'm not sure what a factory mj bucket seat looks like, or what makes them rare. Here is what's in it, I don't know if they are mj or xj seats.

I know it's dirty I didn't end up cleaning the inside today. Changed the fluids and got it running though

Yep, those are the factory buckets. The should flip forward with a lever on the outside shoulder and they appear to have the fuzzy/carpet stuff at the top of the seat back - they did that where the seat contacts the back of the cab on the MJ seats.

Those are definitely the good seats to have - heavy bolster headrest seats....... me likey.

Yeah for the price of new seats and the time to mod XJ seats or something to
the MJ brackets , its worth it to reupholster the old ones with new padding and everything for probably 60-70
a seat . You can even pick a cool fabric or change the padding for a custom fit and look .

I've seen a couple guys over on Comanche club just reuse the outer seat cover from a better condition seat and they look new . Those seats are about as hard to find as a factory roll bar for a Comanche .

Those look exactly like the seats in my XJ. Is the mechanism different, allowing them to fold forward more?

Yeah, they're just 2 door XJ seats, but with different mounting brackets between the seat sliders and the floor. What makes them "authentic" MJ seats are the fuzzy material on the top edge of the seat back.

Where do you find a upholstery shop that will do that for 70 bucks ???

I've got a guy down here in the springs that sub contracts out some of the body shops down here . Find someone who works for themselves interior work
is not costly as far as overhead so just find a guy that does it out his own shop
and you'll see reupholstering shouldn't be too expensive .

The most I ever paid for custom seats is about 200 , but those had two tone
leather and fancy double stitch work . That even included the memory foam
we inserted in the wings and seat back , best seats I ever had and we used
the stock framing .
Ask your local body shop they always have good upholster guys wanting work.

It's been a while since I posted anything about the mj. I figured it was time for a little update since I've gotten some work done on it.

I cut the rust out of the floor. There was some on the passenger side as well. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

I put down a coat of por15 over the rest of the rusty floor after I got it all cleaned up.

I sprayed on some of the duplicolor spray on bedliner. Its easier than herculiner and since the carpet is going back in i figured it would be ok.

Cleaned up the interior as best I could, and put on some cheapo seat covers we had sitting around.

I had an ax15 out of a 96 xj sitting around before I bought the truck. So I pulled an external slave bellhousing and some other transmission parts I needed from the junkyard. I got a t-case from a 98 xj from yellaheep. I bought a luk pro gold perfermance clutch for it since thats what I've put in both the xj's and they have worked great. So I got all that installed.

Yesterday I got the SOA swap done. I read that it would give you about 4.5-5". It's sitting a little higher than I expected. Right now there is more ground clearance at the front of the rear wheelwell than there is on my xj with a 3.5 RE lift and 32's.

And that is where she sits today. I have a hp dana 30 sitting on the side of the house ready to go in, and 4.5" rusty's coils on the way. The rear driveshaft is going to a driveline shop tomorrow to get shortened.
And that's all for now.:wave1:

cool project! one day i will get a jeep truck or brute TJ conversion...

any plans on a 97+ interior or exterior replacement?

Someday I might do something, but right now my focus is just on getting it driving. It's nice not having to have it back together by the next morning to take to work.

Nice! I recently have got motivated to get some work done on my 88' MJ. I'm in the middle of the AX15 swap right now, did you have to do anything with the t-case linkage or does it all line up?

What size tires are you planning with that SOA lift?

Looks good so far!

The 2wd-4wd conversion was actually a lot simpler than I originally thought it was going to be.

Beezle, I pulled the linkage and the bracket that mounts to the side of the tranny tunnel off of a 95 xj. It bolted right in and shifts into everything really smooth.

I swapped in the front axle and driveshaft, and got the 4.5" rustys coils installed because my track bar finally came. The rear is just a soa and it sits about 2 inches higher than the front. I had to put the 32's off my cherokee on it just to see what it looked like. I am definently going to need longer lca's, but here is where it sits now...

Dayum...... that looks good.

I'm thinkin' I don't wanna sell my MJ now......
