I just got a $535 ticket

Your rig is a lot compliant then I expected also, Nice rig.

My pile draws alot of attention but I've made friends with a few cops while battling some bad ones, Maybe they like my tactics or they know it will be a huge deal in court and Ill make them drag it out so they dont bother anymore?

I got ticketed for not having recon, on a bone stock 88 Saleen mustang!! 2 weeks later I got ticketed for not having recon and obstructing my rear veiw with a spoiler wing, in a bone stock STI! I ended up paying almost $1700 for those two sets of tickets!!

damn man that sucks. only ticket i had that much was going 106 down the freeway in a friends car. got pulled over and the cop asked where i was from. told him and he thought i was lying. he didnt like that too much, so they gave me 2 strikes on my license and served me 24hrs community service with a $516 ticket. hurt me for a while but this was like 5 years ago and now it wont effect me so its all good. hurt me there for a while.....

RlCHARD CRANlUM I really would like to hear your honest oppinion as to why the new trucks that are in major violation of many laws don't get f'ed with. Are they considered street rods?

This thread reminds me of a NWA song.......

I would be interested also, some of the shit my former place of employment sold did not conform to any fender flare laws, any mudflap laws and these were brand new tj (a few years ago) new jk's new 1500/2500/3500 trucks, that they lifted and whatnot with no flares or mudflaps.

They have only had one come back in saying they got a ticket for no fender covereage and that was on a tj about 3 years ago.

I seriously think a lot of the reason cops pull over the older rigs is because they are trying to catch you without insurance, suspended liscense etc. and then when they find you are clean they hammer you with equipment violations to make the stop legit.

From another point of view,

Most of the Unimog guys don't have problems with tickets and whatnot, although most of our trucks are either a) stock enough to look stock or b) so heavily modified that the most on-road driving you do is to the nearest play area (20 or less miles).

I've been "serviced" by an officer that had it out for me back in the day, used to get followed through town, etc. etc.. Doyle knows this well. Living in a corrupt small town can cause interesting words to be passed between people. I have been a SAR volunteer since I could drive and thus got a window into the "interesting" side of things.

Honestly I got tired of playing the games with them. Anymore I just play dumb. Half the time I know the department well enough (I work as a contractor for emergency services) that I start dropping names and things end peacefully. Hell I've worked higher sercurity jobs than half the traffic officers I've been stopped by. My favorite customers are the guys that aren't trying to prove something by being the biggest........

I drive a very tall vehicle (404.1 unimog) with no mudflaps but good fender coverage (the rears are 75% visible from behind though!). Sure I've gotten the rocks on my cars, but most of the time it comes from a) loose loads b) dualies c) someone throwing rocks onto a freeway

I'm almost invisible to enforcement in the unimog, but a fully NATO painted military truck with antennas might have something to do with that. :laugh3:

FWIW, it'll piss you off now, but eventually you'll get over it and what goes `around will come around. I was furious when I got my first "fix it" ticket and it wasn't thrown out even after I showed that I had fixed the problem. I had to do community service with the fire dept. and we had the "share of shame"...what did you do wrong.

My responce?

I drove with a blown out licence plate light bulb.

God help me if I loose a head light...thats probably jail time.:flame:

Some things are just so rediculous it does not makes sense. When is the last time a burn out license plate bulb killed somebody? With those ten trillion watt spot lights they shine on you im sure they will be able to read your plates. Maybe they should take off those aviators every now and then so they can see:rof:

There's no way they can fit in the street rod category. There is a date (which I can't remember) somewhere in the late 40's I think that allows a street rod to be exempt from fenders, and allows blue dot tail lights. A late model truck is definitely not exempt.

It’s tough to say why some officers have a hard on for certain violations. It could be that some kid in a lifted rig didn’t show them the level of respect that they thought they deserved, so now they target kids in 4x4’s. Maybe when they were in high school, some popular kid in a lifted rig called them names and kicked sand in their face at the beach.
The possibilities are endless.

Take a group of any people, and there will be some that would die to save your life and some that are so full of douche you can smell the vinegar from 100 feet. I don’t agree with an attitude that would make an officer write a fist full of tickets that serve no purpose other than filling the governments pocket any more than I agree with the attitude that says “why are you messing with me when there are serial killers on the loose”.

The only advice I can offer for those that are targets of overzealous cops would be to be as courteous and professional as possible, take notes, and talk to the officer’s supervisor after the fact. If you get nowhere with their Sergeant, then move up the chain. This won’t apply to those getting a single ticket and ten warnings on one stop though.

I got stopped by a State Trooper up here once for an interesting situation. Long story short, I was on an on-ramp and a bus pulled out from the stop on the on-ramp. Signaled and pulled out in front of me, most likely thinking I was going slower than I was. I drove around him because it was easier to swerve than slam on my brakes...and the trooper was two cars behind. When he stopped me I was courteous and polite. He immediately launched into a 'I understand why you did it but you can't do that' tirade. I remembered him as an instructor in my EVOC course long long ago...but when he started really ripping into me I asked him simply, "Trooper, have I done something to disrespect you?" He was flabbergasted and I thought for sure I'd get some sort of ticket and that he'd go over my XJ with a fine-toothed comb (even though it was legal). He asked if I thought he was out of line and I quickly explained that I didn't feel the personal belittling was necessary. It was kinda like having a heart-to-heart with a Drill Sergeant. He smiled and respected what I had to say...then wished me a good day and told me to watch out for those buses. ;)

I had taken notes first thing when he started into me...but once he relaxed I just let it go. I've got nothing 'bad' to say about the guy.

They use this ^^^ as a reason to stop people to check for sobrity, drivers license, insurance, and to see if you have any warrents or if you are an axe murderer. Just think how would you feel if that guy/gal hit your mom, dad, wife,GF or even one of your KIDS had no license or insurance??? do you see the reasons now.

Cops do a lot of things that the public doesn't understand and sometimes it casts a bad light on them. It's like they have a PR problem. They feel like they don't have to explain to anybody why they do the things they do, as legitimate as they may be. And that's a big reason a lot of people get peeved at the police.

I have made some mudflaps that I can remove on the trail for the back of my XJ. In the height of last summer I got pulled over coming home from Reiter on I405. The Jeep was a little on the muddy side but it was dry and hot and I elected not to put the flaps on.
The trooper was very professional and mentioned that they have had "complaints" of offroader's tires kicking up debris.... He gave me a warning and let me go. Checked my DL as an afterthought. Did not ask to see my insurance.
What the trooper did do was stick his head into my cab. He clearly was making sure that I had not been drinking and once that was done he
clearly wanted to move on to the next stop.
I never have been pulled over in my Cooper S, often without a front plate.
So the reality is I got profiled. Not sure how I feel about this but ask your black friends how often they get pulled over for equipment violations.
Pretty much every time I go to Reiter I extract some piss artist from a hole who has had some alcohol fueled vision of defying the laws of physics.
So those of us who are law abiding enthusiasts frankly get tarred with the same brush as out of control yahoos.
Perhaps NAXJA needs a political or PR wing in Washington state. It is easy for me to say as it would be a big time commitment but I do think that there needs to be an understanding that not all 4x4 people are twits. The article in the Yakima paper a while ago about the community rallying to catch illegal mudders is a case in point of the kind of positive publicity the club could garner.
Last time I was out at Reiter there was an abandoned Jeep, probably stolen, that had been rolled. NAXJA members were taking details down to report to the DNR. This is the sort of community engagement that does send a positive message.
I also wonder if we should organize to write to representatives about any actions we become aware of which infringe on our recreational rights. The stories from Evan's creek are a case in point but it also might be that Covington has a problem. It also seems that some of the laws are for truckers and need adapting as they are just a tad draconian as they stand.

Does or should NAXJA take an active stance on laws that directly impact enjoyment of the sport?

Should we have a sticky that outlines the basic laws that need to be followed... (Bumper height, flaps, flares etc.) ?

Ah, but the problem there is the fact that some of them ARE twits. Even worse is when the rest of the group knows it and doesn't self-police...even when they say they will. ;) They just coddle and pretend it never happened...

But then, the same 'profiling and special treatment' thing happens with every issue out there. Religious displays. Gun rights. Race. Peanut butter allergies. Kids' sports teams (everyone is a winner, yaaay!). Dog breeds. The list goes on.

I would love to see a hidden video of how some of you guys act when you get pulled over. Everyone says they are respectfull and complient... But kinda like my X-Wife.. some people are a bitchy pain in the ass that believes the world owes them something and don't even know it. All it takes is a roll of the eyes.. or body language you probably don't even know your doing to piss them off...

I have been pulled over many times in my old white jeep, which was only 1 db away from being illegal with the cut exhaust, not to mention the dents, cracks, and other stuff... I never got a ticket.

In the decades I have been driving, I have only gotten 2 tickets, 1 I blame on starbucks and a lead foot.. cause I was haulin ass and desearved it.. the other was a camera..

I think cops looking to give you a ticket are usually the corner case and not the norm. Most of them are just doing their jobs. A simple I am sorry, Sir. I will fix that right away sir.. and you are on your way..

I hope cops run every license plate they can when at stop lights... keep those that shouldn't be on the road off... I keep my stuff legal.. and those that don't shouldn't be on the road..

So cops should break the law to enforce it? You know they need probable cause to run those plates, right? :viking:

Pretty much whenever I'm running around Redmond with my jeep and a cop gets behind me I can see him looking down and running my plate, follow me for a few blocks or whatever. I was pulled over a few times by Redmond cops when I first lifted my jeep a little over a year ago now. One guy stopped me because I didn't have a front plate and told me that I needed to get my tires covered. Same guy stopped me a week later, I had a front plate by this time, and reminded me of the fender coverage. I told him that bushwackers were on their way, which they were. After I put the fenders on I didn't really have any problems, just a few looks from cops. I managed to rip them off on a trail and then removed the remainder of them a few months later. But before I had my tube flares done I was pulled over on my way up to Bellingham for not having my tires covered. Since I have had my flares done, and my front plate on, I haven't had any trouble with the cops. The way I see it, put your plates on, and cover your tires and you should be fine. Beyond that I think that the laws are a bit stupid.

the fact that the vehicle is being driven on the road is probable cause enough to run the plates., just like your license is automatic permision for a search. though you can say no, (wich i have done successfuly) its still the officers choice.

Anybody who says yes is a dumb shit. If you say yes any damage they don't have to fix any damage they do, and you are stuck putting everything back together.

Well I have driven a stock XJ since I got the ticket and have passed him multiple times and he has yet to pull me over in a stock rig.

Assuming we're talking about saying yes to a search...look at it this way though, if you don't let them search...they'll probably walk around your rig and be a dick and write you up for everything they see. I'd rather let them search my rig, find nothing, and leave me alone...then pay $100's for ridiculous tickets. Maybe I'm missing something but that's how I see it.

agreed. There is nothing bad in my jeep; just rope, tow straps, and stereo stuff, and a fire extinguisher.
