Hypothermia Run 2008 (March 29-30)

IN: My Dad will be out of town so I no longer have a reason to go ski racing that weekend.

Is the plan Tinkham or Jack's Pass ATM?

Current plan is Tinham (South side, up to the top).
I don't plan changing that unless unforseen issues make another location particularly better.

Who is still in and who is bailing?

I don't see any issues with the lack of snow happening at Tinkham so we will keep it there. The snow should be much wetter now and hopefully will pack well.

Lets put a more permanent list together of who is still planning on going and start to put some more details together.

Also, please let me know if you are interested in just wheeling and not spending the night either Sat or Sunday. Depending on the numbers we can try to coordinate that also.

Michael I would love to come, Im going to be on a family vacation the week before and my flight comes into seatac at 8 saturday night. Keil said he would want to go up on sunday and wheel so perhaps I will be doing that.

X2. That is what I might do. I will make up my mind later this week.

I accept this as your forfeit to prove your igloo building prowess and I lookforward to you attempting to compete in the future :D

Sunday would be a good day for those who wish to do a "typical" snow run. Does 9:00AM work for meeting down at the Tinkham exit for a Sunday run?

Haha well I also look forward to showing you up.;) Pending Keil's willingness to come, I will be there at 9.

There is a chance that snow conditions are not going to work for this trip.
Matt will be providing more detail over the next few days and we will play this by ear as we know more but if the snow is not going to cooporate then we will either make this a single day trip or cancel it all together (depends on the snow). We should have more detail over the next couple of days and will go from there.

Keep your fingers crossed for good snow, I am looking forward to another great trip!!

Alex and I were up there last weekend. It does not look to good. Tinkham road is looking bad. With only about 4-5 feet of snow MAX in SOME places on the trail. Most of the time you can see the gravel and pavement on the sides of the trail. Its the spring snow, so its hard to get good traction. Lots of wheel spin...

We then headed up the highway to the Denney Creek Exit and went up the Denney Creek road. The road up is bare pavement until the hump at the beginning of the trail. Snow is a lot better here than Tinkham with 2-3 inches of fresh powder above the spring snow. It was hard going though, Alex and I only could get to the bridge about 400 feet past the beginning of the trail. The bridge was full of loose snow and it did not pack to well. I was breaking trail and it took me about 30 mins to just go 20 feet. Then I got stuck, I just sunk right to my frame rails. I know there are more capable rigs out there, but I'm just talking about what we ran into up there. Anyways, Alex had to pull me off the bridge, every time he pulled me out of the ruts I made, I would just sink into the snow. He had to pull me off the bridge completely. The ruts I left were huge because he was dragging me out while my frame rails were on the snow. Alex and I decided to call it a day after he got me out and turned around and headed out.

I would have to say that this exit is better than the Tinkham Exit. There is a LOT more snow up Denney Creek than Tinkham and there is more potential.

Just trying to make your decision of what to do Michael a little easier.

I appreciate the input. Matt explained something very similar to this also on his brief stop on the way home from EJS.

I will most likely be going up later this week as is Matt. We will continue to do more research and make a decision later in the week exactly how to proceed.

Michael

Hey Michael / Matt,
I would be interested in participating on the research trip if you want a third rig. I am on 33" truxus, locked F&R, with 4.5" of lift, and proper recovery points.

Cheers,
Matt

I was thinking about Wednesday or Thursday. Give me a call and let me know what works for you; my schedule this week is pretty much open.

-----Matt-----

I'm going to have to cancel, this weekend was iffy if best for me. I'm going to go enjoy the last weekend of night skiing, and ski against all the old guys.

Evans Creek Igloo at the Campground is neet .The Gazebo has snow all the way around it. so it looks like an Igloo with a wood roof.

That is cheating ;)

I will take a look at the Tinkham area tomorrow. I won't have my XJ but will be passing that area on my way to eastern washington.

Between what Matt and Matt find and what I see we will make a determination on how to proceed.
