I assume you can do this same thing with a Durango box. Is this correct?

but why?

A durango box is $200ish at most places and yuou can send your XJ box to PSC to be rebuilt for the same price ported. Also with the durango box you MIGHT have to take it apart from the start to remove the pin limiting the sector shaft travel.

Didn't know this. I want to go hydro assist to releave some pressure off the TB as well as steering. I assume with the rebuild they will fax the slop etc. I didn't realize how bad mine was until I broke some junk and had to be trailered home by a friend and I drove his XJ home. Very tight steering.

so is it absolutely impossible to add hydro assist with the Y-steering set up? I'm looking at getting the Currie HD steering system, and it keeps the Y. Any words of wisdom from the guys who know??

Not impossible but pretty difficult to pull off.

I've been looking into this. I'm running the Currie setup and was unsure of how it would work until after a recent wheeling trip. I ran with a guy in a TJ on 37's who was running Currie steering with a ram pretty much in place of the steering stabilizer. I watched him casually turn the steering wheel with the tires pinned against a ledge.

I'll be giving it a try once I can decide on parts. I need a new box and have been on the fence between going rebuilt stock and porting it myself or just getting a HD ported unit from PSC. Either way I'll be running it off a stock pump/reservoir and possibly adding a cooler in the low pressure line. I'm thinking of a 1.5x8x.75 cylinder. The ram would be in place of the stabilizer, like I mentioned, but would get new mounts welded onto the axle and the drag link. I don't think the ubolt style mount that the stabilizer uses would hold up too long...

Anyone have thoughts on wether the PSC HD box would be worth it over a remanufactured stock box getting ported? Is a cooler in the low pressure line beneficial in a situation like this? And has anyone seen 1.5x8x.75 cylinders with heims, or would I need to have the mounts cut off and heims welded on?

Where would be the best place for the rame. Like if you got a hd steering kit could you drill the tie rod sleeve and bolt it that way, or would going in place of the steering dampner be best. i dont want to weld it to the sleeve i think that would be weak and if you hit a bad deal.

I got my Currie system delivered yesterday. My plan is to swap mounting positions for the track bar and steering dampener. I'll move the track bar up to where the s/d currently mounts, and weld a new mount for the ram where the trackbar currently mounts. (does this make sense?) Then weld a mount on the tie rod for the other end of the ram.
I'm not sure if I'll have to shorten the trackbar (it's a RE adjustable) I have room to adjust it, hopefully not have to cut it.

I'll work on it this weekend and let you know how it goes for me.

a couple of questions that I'll have to work through is how long of a cylinder do I want. What is the best throw distance (I think an 8" cylinder like guys with full lenght tie rods are running might be too long) Maybe a 6" cylinder?? I dunno?

I'll be using my stock box, ported.
Surplus Center has the 1.5x8x.75 cylinders with heims. They call them swivels on their website, iirc.
I'm not going to put a cooler on my lines. Don't know if you actually need it?

after taking apart an AGR box this summer and discovering that all they were doing was taping and rebuilding stock castings anyway - i wouldnt hesitate to just tap and re-build my own box... or tap and re-build a large piston "Durango" box...

The cooler is necessary IMO and well worth while. Every time i go wheeling, i hear my stock power steering system complain and whine from heating up fluid and the fluid thinning out... and wince a little... A cooler and (probably) some higher quality fluid in my system would cure this...

ok,ok,ok, I'll go get a steering cooler!!!! :) Gee you guys are pushy!!
Actually, thanks for the heads up. I'da gone without it and pro'lly been sorry!

definitely put a cooler on, it's very cheap, very easy, and will quite possibly save your pump which is rather expensive. go to a junkyard and grab a steering cooler from a Ford Explorer.
Lately I've been going through half a bottle of fluid each wheeling trip, and what was leaking out was still smelling burnt. That's why I started thinking about the cooler. Thanks for the heads up on the Exploder cooler.

So a remanufactured stock box and pump/reservoir sound like they're in my rigs near future. Surplus center shows a 1.5x8x1 cylinder with swivel eyes that's out of stock, and they don't show a 1.5x8x.75 with swivel eyes at all. If they get the 1" back in stock I might give it a try, but I think I'd rather stick with a .75 if I can find it.

I ended up going with the 1.5x8x1 HD ram for mine.

Does the stock reservoir have enough capacity to handle the change in volume between full compression and full expansion? Should be around 5.5-6 cubic inches. I also have a remote filter set up that adds about a quart to the total volume (but not necessarily the reservoir volume).
