I call next in line after Gordo for Kevin's cage skills. Haha
sounds like we're on the same page here kev. I'm on board with the boat that says an HREW cage that is VERY well designed will do you about the same as a DOM cage in a roll down Cadillac. both cages would be totaled. so don't go rolling down Cadillac
a well designed cage is a well designed cage. it's all about budget vs. what you plan on bouncing it off of to determine which material you use on a weekend warrior
What are you guys paying if you don't mind me asking? I just ordered a 20' stick of 1.5" .090 wall hrew at $1.79 a foot.
Btw might be up in sac on Sunday
Please do the needful.
DOM is NOT a true seamless tube. That stuff is super expensive and starts as a billet rod that is deformed over a mandrel. Whole different story. Don't go there.
There's a lot of 90% correct info in this thread so I figured I'd chime in.
DOM is seamless tube and does not get welded. You are correct about HREW (Hot Rolled Electric Welded) however in that it is flat plate that gets rolled and welded. Because of this the wall thickness can vary and is generally not recommended for structural applications. Like mentioned before however, if used correctly it can still make for a good cage. Just don't go looking to pass tech when it comes time to start racing.
DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) starts out as a cold drawn solid bar. While still in the molten state, it then has a mandrel pushed through the center forming it into a tube. There is no welding involved in the mfg of DOM tubing.
You can find video's of the process on youtube as well.
