HREW tube buy in sacto

I call next in line after Gordo for Kevin's cage skills. Haha

sounds like we're on the same page here kev. I'm on board with the boat that says an HREW cage that is VERY well designed will do you about the same as a DOM cage in a roll down Cadillac. both cages would be totaled. so don't go rolling down Cadillac

a well designed cage is a well designed cage. it's all about budget vs. what you plan on bouncing it off of to determine which material you use on a weekend warrior

Jake I agree 100%. A properly designed cage will be toast in either case, but I do have to say that compared to an HREW cage after a hard roll, an identical DOM cage will fair better (much better IMO) in identical situations.

Now remember that's just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt lol

And Gordo/Casey, if you guys can figure out a way to add a few more hours to each day, I wouldn't be opposed to it lol

Arnold wanted to open a gym that was called 25 hour fitness. With one extra hour for vorking out.
Maybe we can put something together like that at your house. Worth a shot.

OK we are getting ready to do this. Who is committed to buying some tube? We can get final pricing once we get final counts.

Me: 3 sticks.
Mike : 3 sticks
Phil : 1 stick x .065 wall (if they even have that )

who else?

What are you guys paying if you don't mind me asking? I just ordered a 20' stick of 1.5" .090 wall hrew at $1.79 a foot.

Btw might be up in sac on Sunday

That's a hell of a good price. I think they said 1.85$ A foot. The more we buy the cheaper it gets

Plans changed, sold the rig i was gonna cage and got something already built, so i wont need all that tube. May also scrap my trailer build so dont think ill need much more metal than i already have.

I think I will just go to ABC supply and buy a stick at a time. We can scrap this since there was no real interest other than phials 10 ft. Sorry phil. I was hoping we could do multiple 100 ft + orders then I would jump in with 120 ft just to stock pile at a low price...

DOM is NOT a true seamless tube. That stuff is super expensive and starts as a billet rod that is deformed over a mandrel. Whole different story. Don't go there.

There's a lot of 90% correct info in this thread so I figured I'd chime in.

DOM is seamless tube and does not get welded. You are correct about HREW (Hot Rolled Electric Welded) however in that it is flat plate that gets rolled and welded. Because of this the wall thickness can vary and is generally not recommended for structural applications. Like mentioned before however, if used correctly it can still make for a good cage. Just don't go looking to pass tech when it comes time to start racing.

DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) starts out as a cold drawn solid bar. While still in the molten state, it then has a mandrel pushed through the center forming it into a tube. There is no welding involved in the mfg of DOM tubing.

You can find video's of the process on youtube as well.

never heard that before.

that being said my cage is all DOM. the rear tube fenders will be some HREW and part of the front fenders will be HREW. I noticed it dented pretty easily after like 2 runs on the rear fenders. But its better than sheet metal getting smashed and disoriented.
