How To: Gauge Cluster Swap / Odometer Recalibration (Lots of Pics)

The mileage on 97+ clusters is in the ecu and the cluster, stored individually and updated individually. You will need to have it updated or find one reasonably close to yours.

Who has the ability to update them? Can any shop with diagnostic tools do it? Or do I have to take it to a dealer

i just did the cluster swap in my 89 using a cluster from a 90 but the tach doesnt work, not even a bounce. any ideas?

one of the best detailed and best pictures i've ever seen when it comes to write ups!

freakin awesome job, and thanks so much for this.

i've been curious to this for a while now for my 87 comanche but didn't think it was worth the trouble trying to research until i ran across this.

Great write-up.

Only legality there is with odometers is that you cannot change the reading for sale purposes. I have turned many back to keep info straight on some of my drag cars. I looked into that subject a while ago when doing it. But back on topic................ again nice write up
no one has to know you changed it lol

If you have it inspected it WILL show up on a carfax report if you are not extremely careful. And that is a great way to get in trouble with the law.

I did the swap on the '98 and the original speedo had 166,000 and the new 155,000. When it needed inspection I swapped out to the original for the inspection and then after swapped back. Now my mileage is closer to the original but still less and until it is more I will have to keep swapping for inspection.

In Colorado, if the cluster is changed out, the original mileage must be documented and the starting mileage on the replacement cluster must be documented.

It is rather illegal to alter the odometer in most, if not all States...

This goes back to the days when the odometers only displayed 5 digits. When a Used Car Lot would get a high miler in (say, around 90k or so), they would chuck the speedometer drive cable in a drill and run the mileage up to some good looking number. Say 45k or so. It was primarily for this reason that odometers now can display just short of the 1 million mile mark.

The Feds at work. Attempting to protect the consumer. But, as has been demonstrated here, a mechanical odometer can still be tampered with. The electronic versions have the mileage stored in a special memory that is allegedly can not be reset.

I maintain that what one Engineer can make fool proof, another can break into...

There is always someone smarter than you, the guy who taught you.

And that is why the rules-following bureaucrat at the RMV thought what they thought... my van has a 6 digit odo (goes to 999999, then recycles) and my dad accidentally checked the odo rollover box when he signed it over. It actually has 137k miles on it.

What did the automaton at the RMV say? "oh it will just show up as 237k miles"

Me: uhhh, no, it is a 6 figure odo, it will say 1137k miles, if a Dodge made it that far I would be proud of it

RMV idiot: no, when it rolls over it goes from 137 to 237k

:dunno:

Unless Dodge only put 2 segments of the 6th digit (so it maxes out at 199999) they are wrong. But the book (not revised in decades I am sure) says you increment the 6th digit when it rolls over, so it must actually have 237!

I gave up arguing. Wasn't worth the headache.

would love some help with my 95,bought a cluster from junk yard today to find out after removal that i have electric speedo just would like to know my year options to look for so i can make the full gauge swap also

Okay so first of all thank you very much for all the information and all the pictures and everything, that helps a lot. But I have a kicker for you on my 89 Comanche which has the renix era Harness, the PO swapped and 06 Jeep Wrangler TJ 4.0 L engine which sensors do you think would work on mine? Or if anyone happens to know I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks!

Well the information you need is that the 2006 PCM processes the oil pressure and temp readings and sends it via the can bus to the cluster. Unless you have the 06 TJ cluster and wiring swapped in then it might not work like you want. The 06 head does not have the temp sensor port for the renix era temp sending units.

This isn't really the right place for this question but I hope I gave you the information you need. If you have any other questions please start a NEW thread about your specific vehicle as this thread isn't about engine swaps.

Hmm, maybe an 06 TJ still has pci bus?

Ok cool thanks for the info! And Sorry I didnt mean to mess this thread up

No worries, and welcome to NAXJA.

My suspicion is that the longblock was used with all the sensors/wiring off the recipient vehicle (the RENIX one) but yeah, please start a thread preferably with some pics of the work that was done, this sounds interesting.

Hey Kastein I dont want to keep on ading on to this thread but, im just gona get a cluster with the tach, and if the tempt reads leave it alone (which I dnt think will happen) and if not Ill just instal aftermarket gauges, but if you want to see pics and info I have a build thread on Comanche Club same username too. Cant post the link since I'm using tapatalk right now, but it's called "Jessica my little bitch" thanks for all the info and sorry if I messed this up, but I dont want to keep on adding on here.
