Well kid as one of the 1st XJ radical builders I'll tell you that the guys are right. I know it's personal but don't take it that way. Yes in 1991 my 1st XJ Frankenstein was an 85 XJ I transplanted a 289 Boss (Hence my
name) for the piece of crap 2.8 Chevy. It got a C4 auto & Dana20 T-case. Ford 9's front and rear( John Currie bought my HP 44 center section) w/ 44 outer up front. I was one of the 1st if not the 1st running 35's they were BAJA T/A's. Back then all you could fit was 32's. I built the XJ for the 3rd anniversary of the Hammers. I have the CA4WDC In Gear monthly (back then now it's a magazine) newspaper to prove it. The cover picture showed my XJ articulating the caption read "Is This Articulation or What?" In the pages inside it had another pic which showed the spotter pointing to the left and it read "Articulators to the Left." SO back then I was running 3 stacked factory spring donuts on top of 5" early Ford Bronco coils (for engine and winch weight) which I had cut the bend off the coil. Ford used bend to clip the coils to the spring housing. I had problems with the coils at times wanting to fall out but I had shorter shocks which I changed to longer and added limit straps. In the article I was still using the shocks to hold the coils in which is really hard on the shocks. So listen and take advice from the tried and proven. But yes adding a big washer or cut circular plate just smaller than the I.D. of your coils would work but cause other problems. You could expect noise and the coils catching most the time when you are compressing the spring causing possibly uneven ride height till it pops back into place or the next articulation.
