How do I keep my coils from falling out???

Well kid as one of the 1st XJ radical builders I'll tell you that the guys are right. I know it's personal but don't take it that way. Yes in 1991 my 1st XJ Frankenstein was an 85 XJ I transplanted a 289 Boss (Hence my NAXJA name) for the piece of crap 2.8 Chevy. It got a C4 auto & Dana20 T-case. Ford 9's front and rear( John Currie bought my HP 44 center section) w/ 44 outer up front. I was one of the 1st if not the 1st running 35's they were BAJA T/A's. Back then all you could fit was 32's. I built the XJ for the 3rd anniversary of the Hammers. I have the CA4WDC In Gear monthly (back then now it's a magazine) newspaper to prove it. The cover picture showed my XJ articulating the caption read "Is This Articulation or What?" In the pages inside it had another pic which showed the spotter pointing to the left and it read "Articulators to the Left." SO back then I was running 3 stacked factory spring donuts on top of 5" early Ford Bronco coils (for engine and winch weight) which I had cut the bend off the coil. Ford used bend to clip the coils to the spring housing. I had problems with the coils at times wanting to fall out but I had shorter shocks which I changed to longer and added limit straps. In the article I was still using the shocks to hold the coils in which is really hard on the shocks. So listen and take advice from the tried and proven. But yes adding a big washer or cut circular plate just smaller than the I.D. of your coils would work but cause other problems. You could expect noise and the coils catching most the time when you are compressing the spring causing possibly uneven ride height till it pops back into place or the next articulation.

Pics would help probably. You must have super long shocks and zero uptravel if the coil is retained on the bottom and the top is going past the bumpstop tube and coming off.

What front springs are you running? I've got 4.5" RE springs and a 1" spacer and I've never even come close to losing a spring. Never had limit straps and my shocks have plenty of travel as well.

What size tire you running 31 32 33 or 35's. The weight or lack of as well as the compression or limit of, could keep
your axle from articulating to the point of the coil having the room to drop out!

Maybe if everyone stops calling them "limiting' straps that just sounds negative right off the bat, limiting something. Start calling them "awesome straps" or something catchy, "flex straps"! If he adds flex straps he can brag to all his friends about having them since it's all about flex.

The normal Wednesday night bash thread...

I had same issue didn't wanna loose flex , ended up cutting out the coil buckets an doing hoops an 16" travel airshocks , have weight on all tires , still needs limiting straps though

Can anyone say "unloading"?

I bet it's easy to flop.....

One of the problems with shocks that are too long to use effectively is that the spring rate at ride height is too low and there is a lack of stability. Also, the push off on climbs and side hills cuts down on performance.

I hate to bring this stuff up, but I will to make a point. There are a hand full of us who have been around NAXJA for many years, and have gone from 31's and 3" lift to all having XJ based rockbuggies and racing King of the Hammers.....and every step in between. If you ask anyone who has been out with us, they'll tell you our stuff works. We run with any buggy out there. We all have 12" front shocks.

The best performance requires a balance. If you go extreme in one area it will take away from another area and overall trail performance will suffer.

next you're going to tell him not to run 38s on a dana 30. Hasta

your reason and logic amount to nothing when it comes to this kind of argument

to the OP i understand what your trying to do. i "tried" to do it myself. we as enthusiast's are always trying to reinvent the wheel. but sometimes we have to take our egos out of it and say "alright world you got me" i too am going to have to get limiting straps and buy the correct bumpstops im cutting the hell out of my tires because i was hunting for flex.now i realize i have to find that correct balance of mega cool looking flex with actual real world performance that actually helps my XJ. also a reason im a fan of using an RTI ramp to test before you hit the trail. i want to be able to STUFF my tires into my fender wells without cutting my tires. and im only running a 4.5 on 33's

i gots work to do!

Get several pieces of PVC pipe in different diameters and put them one inside the other like a telescoping antenna. Anchor this contraption top and bottom inside the coils. Problem solved. You lengthened your bump stop without sacrificing articulation. Spring can't fall out.

P. S. Hide your straps inside and nobody will know.

better yet....

a couple light sabers from walmart. get red and green for port and starboard. would be sweet for night wheeling.

(i think the OP is long gone.)
