Help with gearing decision!

couldn't order 4.10s? I smell a rat, every gear maker ever has 4.10s for the d30. :bs:

I bet the shop ripped you off... or you have other drivetrain worries.

i have 32"s and auto and i'm going to from 3.55 to 4.56. I would think since manuals came with 3.07 you would want 4.10. You can also get JY axles loaded with 4.10s cheaper then you can re-gear, and you score spare shafts

exactly same thoughts as me 33-4.56-auto trans and 33-4.10-5 speed trans. it keeps you one ratio higher then exact stock again so it will account for the extra weight no problem. only thing i notice is that when i swapped my parts from my 5 speed i had 4.10s and 33s to my auto that now has 4.10s and 33s, the auto is much quicker and torquier then the 5 speed was

EDIT: 95REDXJ im with the others in that it sounds like they didnt regear correctly if at all

What about the large number of people like me running 4.88s with 33s and an auto? By your equation, 4.56 with 33s and stick would be the way to go for equal performance to mine. :D

I'd say run 4.10s or 4.56s, whichever you choose will be ok. However, don't let concerns about engine rpm stop you from going 4.56. Your engine will handle the rpm fine, and you'll get decent mileage and better torque out of the deal.

For those worried about over revving their motors... I drove from Worcester to Westport and back (about 130 miles) in 1-2 on an AW4 with 33s, hitting 75mph at times. I averaged 4000 to 4500 RPM and went a bit past the redline at several points.

engine still works fine.

k. I believe the aw4 can take it. but why?

I was towing a trailer and have stock gears and 33s... I could not maintain highway speeds going uphill in 3rd. Not optimal in the least, but I had no real choice, needed to bring some stuff home so it was not in a friend's way for an extra month while I am in Colorado on business.

Okay whos got some gears layin around for me for cheap 4.10/4.11 or 4.56. I'll let what ever set I can get a great deal on be my final decision. Rear 8.25 Front Dana 30

they told me they couldnt get the 4.10 for the chrysler 8.25 unless it was a value gear and that it would howl like hell and he refused to install it.
but you'de still think he would know that before they ripped it apart... because i wouldve taken it to someone who could get me 4.10's

I didn't have much trouble with the stock gears in my AW4 and 33s. Didn't do any traveling, but in town and wheeling was fine. Then I swapped to my 4.56 geared axles and it was a much nicer feel. Made for better in town driving and doesn't rev too high IMO. Still have to correct the speedo so I can figure out my mileage.

He is an idiot then.

Some 8.25s came from the factory with 4.10s, and Chrysler did not install "value" gear brands.

I think you got taken for a ride :(

good luck. At least around here, 4cyl XJs with the 5spd are rare in the yards. I hear they're more common in the south/southwest though.

Yes, you can find a 29 spline 8.25 with 4.10s if you get lucky. Before my last post I verified this, the 97-99 catalog shows 8.25s with those gears and all those years were 29 spline.

Just to beat this horse a little more....

correct me if im wrong, but it seems to me that the final drives on an aw4 and the ax15 are almost the same.

Ive got an aw4, and with 33's and 4.10's, it takes the gearing back down to stock. Im going to jump to 35's shortly, and when I do, I'll be going to 4.56.

I like being able to cruise comfortably and get 18mpg. If i need more on the trail, i'll do a 4:1 kit or a underdrive unit.

here where me and turkey live we got 3 jy's within a half hr or less drive that all have atleast 1 xj or mj with 4.10s, but i have yet to even see a 97+ body style xj at any of them

If I do a junk yard run is there any 29 spline 8.25's that came with 4.10's? I would think I can find those for the D30 all day.
4.10s came with the 4 cylinder engine, and may have come on many police issue or postal vehicles. good thing about 97+ is that you will find a 8.25 with 29 spline count. on the downside, 00+ has a low pinion dana 30.
You ever notice any D44's with 4.10's at are local yards? Maybe I'll just swap out my axle.
good luck... but try this:
http://www.car-part.com/

you may be able to find something close to you... assuming the yards upload their inventory.

Most pull a parts don't bother since people make a mess of the vehicles.

Afaik there was no 4cyl for the 01 and possibly 00 model years. Never heard of the 4.10s in police/mail vehicles, either.

ive only seen 2 xj 44s in the yards in the last 8 months but i didnt check their gears. id say go with an 8.8 like i did cuz i have seen a few with 4.10s recently. its an extremely simple swap to do, took me no time at all and i just carefully cut the ford spring plates off and rewelded them in the correct place and used some c channel to make shock mounts. peice of cake to do

yeah, 8.8s with 4.10s are far easier to find (at least for me) than ANY XJ D44.
