Help with gearing decision!

People with any gears typically seem to wish they went lower. Go with 4.56. Your gas mileage will be a little lower on the highway, and a little higher in stop-n-go than 4.11's, but awesome mileage is rarely a concern with lifted rigs !!!1

Don't worry about the strain. The decision is about comfort.
X2, it costs enough to do gears that you should do em once and do em right. 4.56s or 4.88s (with a full case locker and/or cryo treatment, a lot of people blow up 4.88s in d30s.)

Unless you are broke as hell and junkyard hunting, then go for 4.10s because you can find stock axles with those much easier than 4.56s. That is the ONLY reason I would say 4.10s though.

What do you think may top freeway speed will be with 4.56's or 4.10's and where would my RPM's be at those speeds?
Top freeway speed will be plenty to hit the speed limit. :D
Don't need to be going much faster than that anyhow, especially in a lifted rig. Both for handling reasons as well as the image. What image comes to mind when you think of a Tacoma all prerunnered out with fiberglass and the reverse stinkbug look? For me it's some punk kid driving too fast and swerving through traffic like an idiot because that's what sticks out.

With 33s, 4.88s and AW4, I sit around 2500ish at 70-75

I love the thought of 4.56's low end torque my concern is goin down the highway at 70 75 mph and be winding out.

At 65 mph, I'm hitting about 2700 rpms (again with 32's and 5 spd). At 70 mph I hitting about 2900 or so. It's fine, and the engine isn't exactly screaming.

I would say at above 70 you're starting to hit the edges of terminal velocity with your Jeep, due to its brick-like aero dynamics. It's not a sports car. Apart from having to keep an eye on the law, it's amazing how much wind drag you start feeling, and you gas mileage begins to plummet. For the vast majority of time you'll be below 70 mph, so it's a non issue....

x2 My Jeep runs similar speeds and it's not a problem. The 4.0 doesn't mind 3k.That puts it in pretty close to the meat of its powerband.

You'll love 4.56's.

I can practically lift a front tire in corners because of the torque twist, and locker out back.

Go for it.

Thanks alot Ivan that's exactly the kind of info I was lookin for.:worship:

thats not only the torque twist, its also alot of traction and your jeep not spinning the inner wheel due to the locker. my old xj when it had the lockrite in the rear with the front sway bar connected could 3 wheel the front tire and it was still on 33s and 3.07s at that time. when i put my spooled 8.8 in it wouldnt do it because it pushed too much in the turn. the main thing it takes to 3 wheel is more rear travel then front travel and alot of leaning. thats why linked prerunners do it so well.

i just got 4.56's put in after the shop ripped it apart and then told me they couldn't order 4.10s
its a dog still, it maxes out at 65 on the freeway. its so low i basically get to 4th gear in town and then cruise. ive got a 5 speed and 33's go with the 4.10 most the people that replied and told you 4.56's are running auto's
unless you trailer your jeep to the trail, your freeway mileage will suck

What, you hit redline at 65? I highly doubt that...I'm running 4.88s with an auto. I know a guy who was running 4.56s with 31s and an auto. There've been plenty who run 4.56s and sticks with 33s and no one else has reported that problem. You may want to check for other problems.

Yeah, sounds like you have other issues. Maybe the shop that ripped it open and said they couldn't order 4.10s ripped you off and put 3.55s (or left the 3.07s). Might want to open it and count teeth. That would partly explain what you describe, but it still sounds like other issues.

i have 32"s and auto and i'm going to from 3.55 to 4.56. I would think since manuals came with 3.07 you would want 4.10. You can also get JY axles loaded with 4.10s cheaper then you can re-gear, and you score spare shafts
