Help me out...free 10hp motor

Well, free for me anyway

A friend gave me a brand new Briggs & Stratton 10hp horizontal shaft motor. By new, I mean it is still in the box, never even been fired up. (LOOOONG story) Anyway, here I am looking at this thing thinking to myself that it would make a very nice little go-kart. But then again, that's been done, and I'm looking for something interesting. Anybody have any good suggestions on what to use my new little motor for? Perhaps a more elaborate go-kart, but I'm open to suggestion.

Hovercraft eh? Now that sounds like it could be fun. I was thinking of doing more of a "dirt road" type of kart, but I'm having problems figuring out how to build an axle in the rear. Part of the project here is to spend almost no money whatsoever, so I wanted to just build some sort of axle to be powered by chain or belt, rather than buy one. Any ideas on building them with or without suspension?

A 10hp Horiz would run a good sized generator or air compressor, welder, pump whatever around the house gizmo you like,

It could also power a lame go-kart or small-kid/pet-sized V-Hull boat/hovercraft/ dragster etc...as Remi mentions, RC controls LOL take the mean kitty or that nephew that whined at Chuck-E Chee$es (or both at once) on a whole new adventure: Helpless Offshore Speed Record Attempts :viking:

I was talkin to chewy the other night on the garage phone, and spied a evil grey squirrel climbing in my neighors huge mountain ash. Grabed my rws air rifle, shot the damn thing right out of the tree.....i heard it land on what I think was the kids playhouse.......

Josh, I had a pipe dream similar to yours a few years back(difference was that I didn't already have the motor ). Anyway, I used to be into the RC hobby scene. I'm sure you could pick up the components for fairly cheap used. They've got a couple magazines so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they had a forum or two as well. I think it would be relatively easy to rig up the controls. They just use little servos, rig one like a pitman arm and one to the throttle linkage and you should be good to go. As for what type of vehicle you put under that motor with controls, I think a hovercraft would be badass, but fairly involved. Back in HS I was designing a remote control truck that was approximately the size of a pick up bed. My biggest problem was figuring out a tranny so I could get reverse. That was the main reason I didn't end up doing it. I have the RC components from my hobby car, but it didn't have reverse either, and I wasn't about to build something custom and not have reverse. It's a PITA to run into stuff and then have to go and turn it around. Anyway, for your rear axle, consider IRS, it's much easier when the chain doesn't have to move through the suspension cycle. You could prolly rig up axle shafts out of steering shafts from the junkyard if you were smart about it.

Agreed...which is exactly how my friend came about getting this engine "Clean this crap out of the building. I don't care what you do with it, just get everything out of here by Monday!" says the boss pointing to the pile of boxes at his shop. Little did he know, one of the boxes contained a nice new little motor. The shop that they just moved into had been abandoned for about 6 years and the previous owner couldn't be contacted to give it back to him. Thus, we figured it was fair game for the taking.

I believe this idea comes from England. Some one please correct if that is wrong. Build a Trials car(not trAils). As I seem to recal these were small, almost bicycle tired, about 10hp.,low speed, very low geared. They were for crawling through the muk and such in a very, very slow race. Kind of a cross between a 2wd ohv and a soap box derby. Please note: I never said this was a good idea, kind of like the hovercraft myself.
