Guide me oh great ones......stock to 4:56 gears

Last time I did a Dana (1st time for that matter), if it's the original set the pinions use to be marked +or- for the shims. Get yourself or go to the library, an old hard binded Chilton,s manual it has the pattern you want pictured and the shim chart of how much to add or delete! All that is, is a start point, you'll need to check your pattern. That' what I did because I hate paying for something I should know how to do plus o hate pulling rear brake lines and have to rebleed fat heavy housings.

Uhh? NO! 4.56 is a stronger gear set...and i've broken them. 4.88's have a very small contact pattern in a D30.
I know but, I really like the torque and the way it crawls with my AW4.....it was actually idling over stuff without touching ths gas pedal, shifts are nice and crisp now and it's actually getting better gas mileage also, I will be towing with it (tent trailer).

Not going to be my hardcore rock rig (my Bronco and Toyota are just fine for that) more like a very capable DD/camping family truckster :D

I totally agree, I wish I had 5.13's with my 35's. I just dont think the VERY minor difference in power is worth ANY difference in strength. I do love my 5.99's on 36's :D

Yeah I'm on 538s with 35's and it will 80 in 4th at I think 2800rpm.

Well maybe my GPS was a bit off (no Speedo in car) a calc shows 3k should be 78mph.

not my website, but you're welcome :roflmao:
Seriously? I found that site years ago and always thought it was yours? LOL

It is an awesome calculator though for anyone into 4x4 stuff.

I always thought that website was yours also, I've been using it for years. I guess you're not as smart as I thought you were..... :D

I had 4.56's once with 32's and I really liked it. When I went to 33's it was fine but not as good. When I went to 35's I did 5.13's which I also liked, with the stock motor. I went to 37's and the 5.13's weren't enough, until I put in a stroker and then the 5.13's were perfect. The XJ I have now has 33's and 4.88's and I think it's perfect.

I wouldn't make a decision based on potential gear strength. That subject is debatable with little to no hard evidence either way. Get the ratio you think it right for you. JMHO

Oh, and pay someone to do your gears. You can figure out how to do it, but it's a pain. I have a Jeep in the shop right now changing the pinion bearings and the owner did his own gears not that long ago.

I chose 4:56 to match my 32" tires. It's not my DD, but I will be driving the jeep 5-7k a year traveling to the deserts and mountains.

The need to do list is getting shorter by the day.
