gps? which one

I'm looking for a GPS unit, not an app for a cellphone. Thanks for the suggestion and ripping on my phone, tough guy.

You sure have a knack for telling other people how much whatever they have sucks lately. What gives? Someone take your lunch money?

On topic then. A lot of the GPS makers have off road map capability. Garmin, OVi, Lowrance, Magellan, etc. Some you have to pay for the off road maps, and others you can find downloads of them. Altho, for the cost of some of the gps units, a netbook may be cheaper and have more capability. And most phones with GPS capability, including newer WM phones you just need to DL maps/other and use the integrated GPS.

i have a handheld GPS, I have navigation on my phone. I'm looking for a unit to mount in the Jeep that is capable of displaying on a video screen. that is all.

Does your gps/phone and your Hu have bluetooth. That is the EASIEST way to transmit data. Not many Gps units I have seem have AV out capability.

Phones with or without GPS capability will not necessarily work for the desert stuff... most of the racing organizations put their race maps on a .usr file which works on the lowrance or the format for a Garmin... so other than those... not exactly sure how you would take that info and transfer it into a phone or pc. Plus, keep in mind, you need it to be pretty waterproof and dustproof. I would certainly not want to take a PC out in the silt...

for the lowrance could you use it for on the streets? like for instance could i look up a place on the map that i wanted to go mark it as a waypoint and it could find a route there?

I use a Lowrance XOG. It's small but it's worked fine for 2 KOH's and chasing in Baja. It worked for me racing since I already new the area, so all we really used it for was pre-running and learning the course. But, if you don't need a bigger one for racing the XOG get's the job done, it's much cheaper, and it works well for everyday GPS use.

This is a perfect example of all up in the kool-aid and not knowing what flavor it is. Different world of GPS's dude.
