Government legislated GPS transponders in your car?!

The same study is going to be conducted here in NC. The state also wants to start using toll roads on top of the current gas tax we pay (which is currently 29.9 cents/gallon).

Just another way to squeeze more money out of the taxpayer.

Isn't paying per mile as opposed to paying per gallon of gas used a disincentive for people from buying feul efficient vehicle?

I would think a place like OR would want to give benefit to people using more fuel efficient vehicle...?

You really think it is about tax money?

I think the theory is that the tax will prod those who drive the most, and would therefore pay the most in taxes, into buying a more efficient vehicle to offset the tax costs. The problem with the idea comes when the high-milers look at how much fuel and tax could be bought for the cost of a new car note and new car insurance. My heep averages in the 17-19 mpg range if I'm nice. My insurance as a remodel contractor covers my vehicle, tools and equip. to $3000, and $300,000 liability should I damage a customers house beyond my ability to repair. All of it costs me $96/month.
Assuming the same insurance rates, $2/gal. gas(includes tax), $15,000 loan @ 5.25%(Bellco Credit Union 'Best Rate') for 60 months, and a 52 mile round trip commute for 50 weeks a year, a new car would cost me $1493/year more than driving the XJ. Barring a wreck, I'm pretty sure I could keep my heep running for 5 more years for less than $1400/year.
Not only does that new, more efficient car not make up for its cost in fuel savings, your now on the hook for 'mileage' taxes.

have you not herd of odbIII this is a new system similar to onstar it is a satellite controlled computer program that they are planning on having in all new vehicles by 2012 the new nissan gtr has it and it has a 105mph speed limiter unless you are at a nissan approved track and they can shut down you vehicle if you are involved in a high speed chase and stuff like that sooo they can follow you everywhere... theyre always watching

obdIII (on board diagnostics III) or odbIII (old dirty bastard the 3rd?)?
Yet another reason to stay RENIX. haha
It's a little like allowing your own cars data logger (more post-RENIX tech) to be used against you in court. And yes, the precedent has been set (thanks Cali).

Only the gtr in japan have that.

I am SO keeping my 79 M-B diesel. No cat, no computer, no odometer, and after it's 35 years old, no more annual NC safety inspections :D

Give it fuel and air, (and a roll downhill if the 12vDC sharts the bed) and it starts & runs.

I have a feeling that if they try to backwards-tech GPS transponders into older vehicles, they'll be a lot of them sitting on garage shelves, maybe taken out for a drive to the local Piggly Wiggly a few times a year ;)

Just another reason to live off the grid. I'm so fed up with the taxes it's nuts and only going to get worse. Thanks to OBAMANOMICS. Sorry did not mean to go there. Just paid my property tax on my new house that the tax appraisal just so happens to be $47,000 dollars more then my 2 recent appraisals I had 3 months ago before I purchased it. :smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::smsoap::wierd: Ok get me some Tylenol and a shot of Jack.

don't even really need to gps tag your car any more. Gps tech in phones and cell phone triangulation have been standard faire for a while. IIRC they did use it once to put some one at the scene(might be confused with ez pass in pa).

I've heard some states are trying to use that as a way to keep an eye on traffic flow, and maybe a way to ticket speeding motorists. IIRC hte only way to keep from having your cell phone tracked is to pull the battery out of it, even just turning off supposedly wouldn't work to keep your location hidden.

'think I'll try putting mine in a lead box.:D

Obama is not in office yet.

Obama is not in office yet.

Doesn't matter, his puppetmasters have been in control for going on 3-4 years now...Congress makes the laws....but he'll be the one signing them all.

More info on OBDIII (About mid article).

There is a string attached to Federal money. That is: Take it, and you can't charge for the use of the road.

Taxing for miles driven flies in the face of that long standing agreement.

Yep! Sure is. The Feds have a similar "string" attached to airport improvement funds. And the law is the law. BELIEVE in it while you try to land at Meigs field in Chicago.
