Does anyone know how to set gears?

If so, would anybody like to help get me started on my gear install with some tips/tricks/general help?

Plan is to put 4.88's in a 30 to start out.

id be down to help if you were closer. ive neve set gears tho, but ive read up on it

Is this a daily driver - are you looking to have the gears setup in 1 day or can it take a few nights to make sure we do it right? We did the gears in my brothers 8.8 and D30 over the course of a few days - it might be possible to do the same with yours.

It is a daily driver, but over summer it can be out of commission for a few nights.

I could possibly snatch a spare 30 housing to gear and then swap in, but the rear will need to stay in (8.25).

So would anybody be down for this?
The axles will not be under the jeep. Even just helping me get started would be awesome!
Ill buy the pizza.

Whats your time frame like with the axles? I think there are lots of guys who'd like to help but this isnt always a one day thing and its kind of a big liability. No one wants to feel responsible for grenading an axle. Are you doing new gears and all new bearings and seals? Any lockers?

I have plenty of time. Just need to have them done by the time the snow melts i guess. I understand the liability problem, but that is not a problem with me.. I would take all responsibility. I was planning on using just a mini install kit (stock bearings), but if the bearings need to be replaced, I could bump up to the master instal kit. So new gears, new seals, and a front locker.

Im basically just looking for someone to lend me a hand if I need one.

I have no experience with gears, but I do have experience in beer, pizza and learning. I would enjoy hanging out and watch you guys work do some gear work. I am also good at lifting and wrenching if we needed to move the axles for any reason.

I may be able to help. I installed 4.56s in my old 8.25 and Dana 30. Do you have a bearing press? Makes life easy. When were you planning on doing this? Let me know and I will check my school schedule.

This guy has it right. Its all about the tools.

Setting up gears isn't very hard, Setting them up correctly is whole other story.

Factor in the high dollar amount associated with the special tools needed to set up gears correctly with the lack of interest in this thread. Also, gears and lockers aren't cheap. Why risk that much money by having the gears installed by someone who doesn't know what they are doing?

I understand you want to learn. I might suggest checking out the Las Positas College auto shop program, you would probably have to enroll in the class to use the tools.

Best bet would be to bite the bullett and pay to have them installed. I know for a fact the tools I use to set up gears cost more than I would have spent on having my gears installed at a shop.

Why dont you PM me your number and maybe we can work something out. I've got everything at my shop to do gears.

Two things, have you taken anything apart yet and if I were you I'd go ahead and buy the master install kit with bearings, seals, shims and the whole 9 yards.

Also is it lunch box locker or a full carrier front or rear? If your running a lunch box locker with 4.56s or something then you'll need a new carrier to set the gears up. Randys sells new open carriers with out spider gears for 58 bucks.

If you do decide to install your self might I suggest visiting AccuAutoparts.com. That is where I bought everything I needed for my installs. Since you are all ready in your diff you might as well replace as much as you can afford. Setting up gears is hard but you can do, anyone can as long one has the right tools. I remember having to buy a couple of pricey tools like that bearing press I mentioned and dial calibration for setting backlash. I will say that I was nervous for weeks after the install. Again though, let me know when and where.

I plan on renting tools from kragens, and the tools that they don't offer or that I will need a lot, I will buy.

I do not have the parts yet, so I can't give you guys a date yet. I will update this thread when I am closer to being ready... I should be picking up the axles and tires this weekend.

I really appreciate the offer to use the shop, and I will definitely shoot you a pm when It gets closer.

I understand that this is a huge project that is tough to get perfect, but I am more than willing to give it a shot. Wether I succeed or not, the knowledge I will gain will be very valuable.

Edit: it is a lunchbox locker in the front. I'm picking up a carrier with the axles.

I have to agree, setting up gears is almost an art form, and the right tools and knowledge is everything about the art work to having it done right.

I could loan you a spare 8.25 if you need it to take a number of days, got one completely assmebled just chillin in my garage

Im about to buy my gears and I am in the same boat. My jeep is not a daily and I could leave it for a month without driving if need be. My reason for needing some help is that I dont have any of the presses, spreaders, dials, mics, etc. needed for this, Ive only got the tools to take it apart and the time/patience to get it all back together. If someone's got the time and the tools to help that would be pretty awesome.

OR, if someone knows of a great deal for gear installs, that would also be nice. Willing to travel pretty far and leave it for a while if needed for a good enough deal

Alright guys... The axles are in my garage, and the gears are in the mail. Who is still up for this?

Wow that's killer. Is that in the car or out?
