Ford 6.0s

Can you explain the differences between the two motors? Or possibly a link explaining the differences? I know absolutely nothing about duramax's

Check out www.duramaxforum.com it has all the answers there. Basically they are all 6.6L 403ci. engines with different tunes, intakes, turbos etc. The LB7 had a standard fixed vain turbo I believe and then the LLY's went to variable geometry turbos. Then the 06 LLY changed the turbo intake to a new mouthpiece, it is basically an LBZ without the tune. But some 06 trucks came with the LBZ, it's confusing...and then they also have 6spd transmissions...

My brother has a '05 6.0 and has had no issues with it. A salesman I know had a '05 6.0 and had tons of trouble after the head gasket went the 2nd time, he traded it in a a duramax and couldn't be happier. Boss has an '05 6.0 had issues with the egr cooler leaking, not much else.
King Ranches are VERY nice, my bosses Lariat is very nice also and my brothers XLT is also nice, in that order.
I've pulled 14k with my bosses and it knows it's back there but it's not struggling by any means. a K-5 blazer on my brothers car trailer, couldn't hardly tell it was behind me in his.
I wouldn't buy an '03 or '04, bugs were mostly found and dealt with by '05.

I didnt take the time to read all the replies. However here is my input on this.

I am not partial not any truck maker, as they all have their ups and downs... So be live me when I say the Ford 6.0L Powerstroke is horrible. My dad owned a small trucking company (just sold it and retired) and all he ran were Ford F450's. He NEVER had a single issue with any of his 7.3's, but as soon as he started buying 6.0's it was a mess. In the end he owned a total 10 6.0's and every single one had issues with the engine (never anything else) These trucks would get about 100k miles a year, and our experience is they are good up to about 100k, then the issues start. Injectors, EGR valves, wiring harnesses, Turbo's, cylinder heads, over and over again. about every 40k on each truck we would be putting in new injectors ad maybe a turbo. Keep in mind these trucks were left stock. nothing was ever touched on them. My uncle (my dads brother) bought an '06 F250 6.0L new that he used to only drive to work and hual his Jeep. he had the same issues and was actuly able to lemon law it. Towards the end my dad bought 2 of the new 6.2's and had no issues with them after Ford replaced the radiator (or it might have been the intercooler) on them.

Do yourself a favor and fine either a really nice 7.3L, or a cheap 6.2L. If you cant, give Dodge and Chevy a look, they make good trucks too. The only reasion my Dad would not switch from the Fords is because of the weight he would haul. Ford, at the time, was the only truck make to offer a F450 or 4500 with the brakes that could bring the load to a stop safely, Dodge came out with 4500's but only cab and chassis my Dad had issues with roll-a-long conversions beds (stock F350 beds not tool box beds) cracking the welds, so he wanted a factory installed bed.

Dodge of course offers the Cummins (great diesel) and now has it mated to a nice auto trans, Chevy has the Duramax/Alison combo which is awesome but Im not a fan of the IFS and they have small brakes when compared to Ford and Dodge.

Oh and just to add, my dad did get at least 300k out of all his 6.0's (just about all years also). The last one left was sold to Barry's Speed shop in Corona and they are still hauling with it.

Opinions? It's an 06 F350 SRW King Ranch, i've heard the later the year 6.0 the better.

The later year the 6.0 the better is correct, 06 is a good year for it, I dont think you can beat the interior or even come close in any other brand. If you buy it i would put up the extra cash and get an extented warranty just for piece of mind. Dont let 6.0 stories scare you, 06/07 engines had almost everything worked out.

stay the hell away from ford diesels.

if it was a 7.3, I'd be all over it...but you want too new for that, and 6.0's are steaming piles of garbage...very comparable to a chevy 6.5l in reliability.

yes, they improved them. but polishing a turd just leaves you with a shiny brown stain.

cummins is your safest bet for a diesel. next best is duramax, but they have issues, too. cummins is one of the most reliable diesels you could own, and they (unlike chevy and ford) have more than just experience in passenger vehicles....I build semi trucks for a living, and in a given week, I will rebuild 2 or more rolled over trucks with cummins diesels in them that have over a quarter million on them and are just broken in.

I use to work for an independent diesel shop for a short time. I had to do a set of head gaskets on an out of warranty 6.0l and egr. When the owner of tthe shop told me he had them lining up for me. I told him I QUIT! And found another job at a fleet shop with no Fords. Don't get me wrong I own a 99 F53 with a 460. But 6.9's and 6.0's are junk. And IMO the 6.0l is Ford fault. That motors power rating should never have been that high.

Duramax is an Isuzu built engine not GM, GM just does the tuning. Isuzu builds box trucks that run these engines, and over 1,000,000 have been built. So your information isn't correct.

x2

its basically two isuzu diesels put together to make a bigger motor.

if i ever buy a diesel itll be without a doubt a dmax. out ouf all my friends w tow rigs are the worked cummins trucks are ALWAYS having stupid issues, the kids i know w 6.0s hate them, and the dmaxes are amazing. you never know youre towing and they ride like a family car, not a big truck.

Don't get me wrong, I like cummins but they aren't this miraculous engine that never has problems. My 01' had the transmission replaced and both fuel pump replaced. Both totals were over $2000 so they weren't cheap. My 07 duramax had leaking transmission lines, driverside wheel hub, and a map sensor. The three things I've replace don't even come close to $2000. So it is all in each truck on what breaks. There are 6.0s that are doing well and there are over 500 trucks that have been bought back by Ford under the lemon law. And in that I wouldn't buy a 6.0 because of the possibility that it could be a turd. People also rave about Ford interior's and I hate them, I don't see what they get the reputation, I would much rather get an 04-07 interior with bucket seats up front built by Chevy. But then again. These are just some facts mixed with my opinion.

I have a 2006 f250 crew cab. I have not had more than a year yet, but I love it. Got it used for 19k with 95k and about a week after I got it I had the EGR replaced under warranty. I have 15k on it so far, since I daily drive it. But I am real happy with the way it tows and drives. But this is also my first deisel....

chris's is stock, and yours isn't built that much right? the two kids who have all the problems are basically driving race trucks.

still doesnt take away that they still ride like doo doo compared to the dmax :D

Ima regret saying this later but I have had no issues out of my 400 hp 12 valve cummins and it gets daily driven

That's the difference between a work truck and a chevy. You have to give up a bit of ride quality to get the capability.
of course if you aren't working the truck, chevy's are fine

1 mil isuzu powered box trucks vs. easily two or three times that cummins powered box trucks to heavy trucks. you're talking to a person who works on cummins powered trucks of all sorts and sizes....and not on the motors themselves, but on the rest of it. the trucks break down before the motors do.

cummins has the upper hand. end of story.
