Fastest XJ

I've done 95 mph with my 37's beadlocks and 5.43 gears, no sway bars etc.. I didn't know how fast I was going because since I have a NV241 Rocktrac t-case I don't have a speedo, but my wife told me to slow down. She's like....do you know how fast you were going....I was just testing my Jeep out after coming back from San Diego after a full width axle swap. :laugh3:

You guys ever have your speedos so far past 100 they look like they're going to wrap right around and start at 0 again? ;)[/QUOTE]
off subject but my 91 escort did that... whith 3 other people in the car i stuck my hand out the window and just about barrel rolled onto the other side of a four lane...... as far as my jeep goes its so damn loud at 75 it scares me

Probably - but that won't stop me from trying! I just want to see if it can be done...

I'd like to work out a way to:
do ~200 in a straight line
still be streetable
handle mild-to-moderate off-road (trails, fire roads, some mud/sand/rocks. Can't build it too much for off-road, or I won't be able to hit speed.)

I'm kind of thinking you haven't driven on the salt flats before. If you can get the chance go and drive then rethink your plans. The flats are like driving on ice when you get to speed. The rush comes in while fighting the wheel and the constant feeling that the a$$ end is coming around. Nothing like it.

I've been kicking it around quite a bit lately. I was thinking a long wheel base MJ should be manageable but I still doubt to 200. Like you I'm looking for a grocery getter and something that will cut a little speed.

I hate it when people make me think of going fast. That's why I lift my junk.

I've only gotten up to 95 accidentally. Dont really want to go any faster.

How could you not want to go any faster? I'm always craving a few more mph's. Which is why I drag my 67 Charger. And fourwheel my jeep. Not saying I havent smoked a few ricers and a punk ass peer in his lifted Z71.

If you're that into MPH, why are you drag racing? Just curious, but even 10 sec cars are trapping at 120-130(ish), you can get MUCH faster on the track (as opposed to the strip), or at the flats....

EDIT: I'm all about the 1320 myself, but I'm more into the raw g-forces associated with massive acceleration.... Speed is more of a byproduct for me, although there is a certain something about crossing the 150 mph mark....

Yea the g's are incredible when launching. But unless you are NHRA compliant a lot of cars running 10's won't trap at 120. I've seen cars run low 10's that hit 150. But each is different. By the way, I have done some circle racing but I couldn't seem to get into it. I have done a lot of road racing though.

I've done some moto-x racing, and wow what what a rush! :) I have paticipated many different types of sports and in my opinion there is nothing that compares to flying 8-10 ft in the air and traveling up to 50ft. I can honestly say that it is the most exhilerating sport I've ever done.

I just wish I didn't crash, trail riding, and get a brain injury cause I'd probably still be doing it today, I was pretty damn good. DAMN talk bout some BS. :( :(

Actually the track is really safe, ya can only get going 20-30 mph then you have a 180* turn. Its the damn trail that almost killed me, anytime you can unleash 50 hp in a 250 lb machine thats capable of doing 100mph theres some danger to be had. Trust me

Me and my buddy raced the other day, my 90XJ 193K 4.0, AX-15 on 30's w/partial 3"lift vs. his 90XJ 129K 4.0 AW4 and 31's on stock suspension. The only way either of us could really pass each other was to fade way back, downshift and stay in it cause the other XJ would keep up. At one point I looked down and was doing 95 in 3rd, no clue as to the RPM's but I still had a good bit of room under the pedal and 2 more gears left

So in 'theory' at a drag strip, both of us w/stock tires which XJ would be the fastest, manual or auto?

It's a question of weight, gearing, and power mods (if any). The strip is all about how much power you have to pull how little weight you have with as low a gearing as possible.....

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread (after using the search feature...:p). I've been meaning to ask for a long time if the XJ has any kind of a limiter. So far in this thread I've read that all XJ's are limited to 116 and 119; which is it?

I was seriously beginning to suspect my stock 1995 XJ with 122,000 miles on it didn't even have a governor. Everytime I get out on the highway I take it up to at least 80. I was running alongside my friend who has a 1987 Mercedes 300E, and, since my speedo only goes up to 85, he said we were going 105, based on his speedo. Well, my speedo has a red line that goes straight down from the center of the guage, and I've had the speedo's hand go just a tad past that red line. Based on where the hand was when I was going 105, and assuming the hand still goes around at the same rate regardless of speed, I had guesstimated that I was going from 120 to 130. However, everything on my XJ is stock, and the tires aren't much if at all bigger than the stock tires, so it sounds like I wasn't really going but 116 or so.

Is it really bad on the vehicle to routinely wind it out like that? I also take it to redline taking off from stoplights daily; how bad is that on the drivetrain? I love doing it, but obviously it's not good for it, so I've tried to back off, but rather unsuccessfully. I've also grown fond of building it up against the break and leaving some nice black lines behind me when I take off. Is my Jeep going to live to see another 100,000 miles if I keep driving like this?

Thanks!

I have cooked it up to 105 with my XJ...from 65-75 shook then once my speedo went past 85 I knew I was over 100 b/c I never corrected it when I put the 32's on...

I have clocked mine in the high 13sec range. I won't look down at my speedo it pins the spedo way too quick anyway.

Check his posts, he got a ls1/4l60e combo with 4.88's and 35's. still, 13's? thats a good'n modded ls1 to take a lifted caged xj on 35's into the 13's.

heheh those of us with 5 speeds can hunt imports in stock getup...i'll bet i'm in the high 15s which would put me close to most "hot" imports, except the very fast ones that have been coming out since 2003 or so (srt-4, wrx, cobalt ss, etc).
