Everyday carry folder

What are ya'll carrying?

I got a ZT Designs tactical folder for Christmas a couple years ago and don't care much for it. No its not fir sale or trade. :)

Of any knife I've ever owned it is by far the hardest to sharpen, and the heaviest "tactical."

I'm looking for something in the sub $100 range, $50 would be better.

Whatcha hot and whatcha think of it?

Dunno if they'll be <$100, but I rotate between my mid-size Applegate/Fairbairn folder and my Benchmade/Emerson CQC-7B(LH) on a regular basis. Both are rather solid, hold an edge well, sharpen relatively easily, and are about as reliable as the average brick.

I really like Emerson's idea of a "chisel grind" - only sharpen one bevel, strop the blade, and you're done.

well, i can in something like 40 states anyway....as xjeeper says..."legally"

funny how i've gotten out of the habit of carrying a knife.

Beez - even if you can carry a sidearm, a good blade is always a handy thing to have around.

Except when I was in Basic, I've carried at least one blade on my person since my fifth birthday (which is when I got my first.) My wife asked me why I always had a knife on me - I bought her one. That was ten years ago, she hasn't been without one since (she now has two that she alternates carrying in her pocket and an ultralight folder on her keyring.)

The SOGs really have my attention.

How's the steel on those? Do they hold an edge well?

Are they a pain to sharpen?

That's my biggest issue with the ZT. I can sharpen a knife very well. I enjoy the process.

But that ZT has me whipped!

I can send it to be sharpened under warranty but that costs money andI have to go without a blade while it's gone. AND I hate to have anyone else mess with my blade...

My experience with SOG and their mystery steel is that it sharpens up pretty good. I can easily shave hair off my arm. However, they tend to lose that scary sharpness pretty quickly. The edge can be brought back very easily.

My SOG will dull so I sharpen it. I'm not very good at sharpening but I can keep the SOG sharp enough or me.

I wish I knew what happened to my last SOG, either I left it out at work and it was stolen by the janitorial (unlikely) or it's somewhere here at the house.

Kershaw Ken onion something or other, usually.

Went with a skeleton frame Gerber from Walmart for $24.

Cheap enough I can abuse it and not freak out every time I think I've lost it.
Combo straight serrated blade fits my hand well...

x2! I can't stand to carry anything else now! There's a guy on bladeforums that sells Kershaw "factory seconds" (brand new knives with a small cosmetic blemishes) for great prices. Just search the classifieds over there. (No, I'm not affiliated in any way!)

That's strange, I have the opposite problem with my SOG's. I have a hard time getting a "razor" edge but it seems to hold a decent edge forever.

And as far as I know, their "mystery steel" is just austenitic stainless :dunno:
