Yup, and all from people who have never had any other H4's, my 7" round CIBIE's are awsome in the TJ but I've known that from when I bought them 73 for my Vega GT, yup, they are that old and have been in 4 different sets of wheels. My Hella E codes I also like though the cibies have a much more knifelike cutoff but then they have precision cut lenses too.

Right. Hella>Autopal, Cibie>Hella. But this thread was about a cheap, efficient upgrade. Cibies are by far the best I have ever seen, but I would rather start piecing together an HID setup than blow $170 on halogen headlights.

These things are GREAT! Huge difference. That's the best 46 bucks I've spent on any kind of lighting.

I used the autopal headlights, 100w bulbs and I wire them both up to relays with 10agw wire. Tons brighter!

I just installed the lights with a Summit harness.
WOW!!!! What a difference.

What part number/item number is the Summit harness you used ?

I just replaced one of mine today with an autopal and the 55/60w bulbs. I also had a problem with the bulb being a little loose in the socket so i put a bead of RTV down allong the corner of the holder and gave it a few hours to cure. Worked great and you cannot see it at all.
I have pictures of the autopal vs. GE halogens that I will post once I figure out how to post pictures.

anyone go with the blue bulbs? just wondering if they are like the Xenon or "bmw/mercedes" bulbs you see around at night and how they compare to light output.

Blue tinted bulbs are worthless. They literally dip a regular bulb in a blue stain. You basically end up with a filter so you're throwing away usable light and just end up with a hotter running bulb instead. Plus they make you look like a brain-cell-impaaired ricer.

Oh jeeze I forgot to post the pictures.....
Now I have to search my computer.

Seriously not trying to grill you but you obviously searched hard enough to find this thread, now read the thing. Blue lights are ghey and imitating the color of HID is ghey. Cheap Blue light is irritating to a lot of people, and the coating on the bulb only lowers your light output. So don't follow the herd.

If you want a cheap H4 upgrade that is a massive improvement on normal DOT 6054 style sealed beam headlights then you found the right thread:

Ebay store of Indian guy who sells Autopal's (he's still in operation):
http://stores.ebay.com/Autopal-Lights

Direct link to what you need:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/79-0...ryZ33710QQihZ017QQitemZ270326225626QQtcZphoto

Do NOT get the DOT approved versions he sells, unless you either like having less light and less well defined light, or you are super paranoid that your state inspection grease monkey will actually take a magnifying glass and look for the DOT marks on what is a nearly 100% stock looking headlight.

DOT approved means no horizontal cutoff (which allows the light to be brighter without blinding on coming traffic; because the cutoff means the light is being directed parallel to the ground instead of blooming up into the stratosphere uselessly). Remember light directed anywhere but on the road and a little to the sides is just wasted energy, i.e. less light directed where you need to see.

BTW since this thread was revived I will take a minute to say that all my E-codes (Pairs in my XJ, MJ my Wifes XJ) are still going strong and on the cheap no name H4 bulbs that come with the housings at that.

all this talk about these bulbs.... and that housing, dot this, dot that... its polishing brass on the titanic,

IPF+HID, and never look back.

you got something against blue light?

Yes, Blue Light beer is like having sex in a canoe, it's #@%*king close to water.

:D

And you are only the third or fourth person to make this exact same post! The point of the thread is a low buck upgrade. The E-code standard is a serious upgrade to the non existent DOT standard.

Its annoying to oncoming traffic, and you get less usable light. The ricers are doing it because they think it looks cool and not because it works well. I put it in the same category as neon lights under the doors.

I have a set a AutoPals in my Comanche along with a home brew headlight relay setup and generic NAPA 80/100 H4 bulbs ($8 each, btw). They went from yellow undefined blobs of light to a great beam pattern. I never get flashed on the low beams and the high beams seriously light up the road.

I just wish I could track down a set of E-Codes for my 93 Grand Cherokee. I hate that Chrysler decided to go with the aero look at the expense of a decent headlight pattern.

Mine as well, no problems.

However, i'v been meaning to pick up a set of spare bulbs. Could i install these?

I havent yet upgraded the harness, but would it be needed with a 55/100w? If it's not safe i can just order the 55/60's.

Well personally I would highly recommend upgrading the wiring before upgrading to higher-wattage bulbs. It's not hard, and it makes a nice increase in light output even with stock wattage bulbs. Also you might consider the European +50 or +80 bulbs, which are stock wattage but use a different gas mixture to generate more light. I'm running Philips +80 bulbs and they are incredibly bright and have a nice white color with a hint of yellow but no blue. I had to order them from England though.
