Doing commander headlights on my 88

i didnt cut out allot of metal. its allot of taking the header panel off and on with headlights and seeing where headlights hit so you know what metal to cut. i would make a mold but i dont have the time or place to do it. its really not that hard if you have some fiberglass experience. You have to cut the headlight holders from the existing header panel and the lower peace to make the headlights fit. i layed down a garbage bag on a table and lay down the header panel with headlights. i made sure where any fiberglass touches it is well sanded with course sandpaper. I also made sure the headlights were taped up so no fiberglass gets on it. once i have my headlights positioned where i want them i lay fiberglass mat then i brush on the fiberglass on top, mainly where it meets up with the header panel. i do one layer then wait til its dry, then i through more layers til its about flush with the header panel. When all dry i remove the headlights and look from the backside and it shows me where to cut, so you get the shape of headlights. grind down any fiberglass thats to high and fill with fiberglass filler. Lots of sanding, fill with fine filler to get perfect. youll also want to grind the backside smooth then i put more mat with fiberglass for strength. Allot of work but its way cheaper.

oh and i didnt have to dirll new holes, the header panel actually holds my headlights in really well and the bottom bracket also helps.

Thanks for responding Kosmik. It's too bad you don't have the time to do this. You might be able to make some nice cash making a mold like this. Unfortunately I have no fiberglassing experience, so I won't be able to recreate your work. I have seen some people mount this light without filling in the holes and it kinda looks ok.

Maybe it's different down there but I'm sure up here the odds of finding a Commander in the junkyard is slim to none, but even if I did find one I can only imagine the cost. I like the look of it and it's different. I just have a hard time justifying the cost of those when autopals net me close to nothing. Dont get me wrong, I think it's a great looking mod, just out of reach for little old me. How much did you get the headlights for?

If you are in the autopal group, then something like this obviously isn't for you. Sylvania Xenarcs cost a grand, which I had a set of on my '99. Commander lights out of a junk yard would probably be cheaper than that. But of course, I would be after the HIDs in the newer XKs.................:repair:

a grand, for headlights, wow, they're headlights dood, more important things to spend a grand on in my world but you look young.

I've always found it highly questionable when someone criticizes someone else's recreational spending habits.

I'm sure most average people would say "You spent how much on your Jeep so you can play in the dirt?"

You sound old.

just saying, I would spend a grand on gearing before a set of lights, but I guess maturity is a beeatch.
Then again my family has a nasty habit of eating up the $ before it gets to the jeep.

Not to hijack or anything, but you're right, I should have bought gears first.......................

Back OFF topic for just a sec.....

How do you like those Maxxis tires?

(getting ready to lift and stuff....just wondering)

I thought they were great. I bought them back in the day when they were hardly known, and you could get 33s for $116 a tire. Increased popularity has since jacked up that price. But I still think its a good tire for the money. Maxxis makes good rubber.
