disco axle with non disco shafts

Looking to swap out disco shafts with non disco shafts.

Aside from making a cover for the disco actuator, we are gonna need to add the proper seals on either side of the diff... but what seals will work? I assume that the same seals that come in a non disco unit will fit into the disco housing with out any problems & I won't have to get anything super special? Right? Seems too easy.....

Anyone done this before?

you will need to get the passenger side axle seal for a non-disco axle. To install the seal you have to pull the carrier and put the new seal in. It's not hard to do unless you have no idea what you are doing.

Everything else just slides right in.

SO I do or don't have to "machine" out the housing to accept the seal?

I've been reading posts .... some people say I'll have to dremel that sucker out (no biggie) .. other say there is a seal available from warn, but never seem to know the part number.... anybody know the part number?

If I do have to dremel out the housing, do I just do test fits till the seal matches the other side or is it different from side to side?

Been researching.....

Warn seal won't work unless you get the warn alloy shaft because it is a different diameter or something....

The only option seems to be to dremel out the inside of the housing to fit the standard non disco seal.

Anyone else thinking about doing this.....
The Jeep/Mopar part number for the OEM seal (driver's side) should be: 4874477

I'll be getting into this this weekend and will take lots of pics for all of you....

Just to clear a few misconceptions.
The axle shaft diameter where the seal rides on one piece axles is 1.190" for stock AND Warn axles.
The disco axle housing is not machined on the passenger side for the one-piece axle seal OD of 2.125".
The seal I've used is National#471763. It's 1.125 X 2.00 X 0.250. The Warn seal is the same ID and OD but is .435 wide.

Randy's sells a kit with the needed parts to switch to solid axle. Give them a call, it's just a few $$$ and you don't need to machine anything.

I am also going to do the 1 pc axle swap in a disco housing and this is what I have come up with so far. The National seal # given is no longer avail. so I went to NAPA and they crossed it, their # is 11343, It will not work, the I.D. for the axle is only 1.125" and the axles,in my case, measure 1.192". I asked around and of course no one had the time to look for a seal by shaft size and O.D. for me. So, I took out my very large MSC catalog and found some shaft seals that may work, they are on their way here as we speak. The pt. num. for the MSC seals are #36677524. I think this will work here's why.... The O.D. of the MSC seal is 1.983" the I.D. of my axle tube is 1.975" that is a good press fit into the axle. The I.D. of the seal is 1.188" and my axle shaft O.D. is 1.192", that is around .004" running fit. I will try these seals for the simple reason being I will not have to grind/machine the housing. If they do leak I have the normal axle seals for a non disco housing to install,National #710068, and then I wil machine the housing.

I called Randys .. it's 28 bucks....

Guy seemed a little fuzzy on exactly where the seal went... so I hope this isn't going to go out by the actuator & cause me to have to polish my shaft or something.....

i bought the seal kit from randy's too, I have not done the swap yet do to the need to get 99 hubs ass. anybody got one or two to sell me

Did it come with instructions? If so, can you look at them and tell us if it goes at the carrier of the knuckle end? Inquiring minds want to know.

Would there be a problem doing that conversion on a DD? With a lock rite?

I have 4 used hubs sitting in my garage that are useless to me cause I have manual hubs. Came off my 2000 PM me if you are interested.

89... you can do that.

You'd lose the dissconnect so the locker would be locking up both sides on the street ... but it'd be no different from any other person with a non-disco housing running a locker. I'll let other chime in on why that would/wouldn't be a good idea.

I would assume that the Randy's kit is the same as the Warn kit, which gives you a new stock axle seal to go just outside of the disconnect motor housing, a plate to block it off, and a new inner seal to go next to the carrier. The part number for that seal is what is sometimes elusive, and it will fit with no grinding or machining. BTW, the Warn shafts are the same diameter as stock shafts. I have one of those seals to go next to the carrier on a disconnect housing. The seal I have doesn't say a brand name so I don't know who's part number it is, but it's a place to start and should cross reference. The seal part number is 407160.

Well, my question would then be why 2 seals on one side? The non-disco housing only has 1 so why would they feel the need to use 2 seals?

Was wondering the same thing....
