dana 35 strength

If youre gentle on it and dont lock it. I wheeled one with 33s. A babyd the crap out of it but I always feared the worst. If you can get an 8.25 from a junkyard for cheap its good piece of mind.

Drive it 'till it drops!

The one in my '90 had a dent in the axle tube, from an accident where my Mrs. put it on a curb. I DD'd it four or five years, then it started making funny sounds.

Open / open on 31s until the cows come home. Been there done that.

then I would probably replace it with a 29 spline 8.25 and never worry about it again.

if it has ABS you will loose it, unless you're willing to have machine work done to accommodate the tone rings.

for how cheap 8.25s are in the Sierra Chapter and local FB groups, especially for 29 spline , 3.55s, LSD for under 150$, id say call it cheap insurance to run the 8.25. but no rush, you can run that 35 for a while until you can find a cheap 8.25 locally with a LSD,

this guy has a 35 with the old school arn full floater kit. offer him 200$ and sell the locker and run it open:

I think that is what I will end up doing. I can put the 8.25 in the corner and build it while I drive on the 35.

it aint going to break just DDing it.well it can, but it probably wont. I did a lot of expedition style camping in the sierras on a 35 and 33s before I got into "Real wheeling" and junked it . compared to the occasional 4lo on a logging road or something. My cousin from livermore wheels his rig on 32s and a 35 rear pretty hard and he hasn't broken it yet which is surprising . that being said, plan to eventually swap it out.

What would one look for to find an 8.25 LSD? May be a good stop gap while I wait to either build 44's or upgrade my 27 spline shafts and lock them with a lunch box.

I broke one shifting from 1st to 2nd while making a left hand turn on pavement.

ate three teeth off the ring gear just like that.
So it is quite possible to break one on the street not doing much.

I run a 14b in one rig and a xj 44 in the other. I wouldnt mess with a 35 personally . But i would run just about any 8.25 as a temporary axle while i build better axles and just wheel accordingly. I cant find the link but I saw a 29 spline 3.55 lsd 8.25 a few weeks back for like 100$. That would be a killer temporary or permanent rear end

Temporary?

I'd run a 29 spline 8.25 permanently for anything smaller than 33's.

It's just as strong as a 44 The only significant advantage to a 44 is semi float.

Quoted for truth 3 years on my 33-35s wheeling with the skinny pedal all the way down and she lived long and prospered. I killed it when I jumped it and stayed in it trying to make a hill climb on heavy 35s and that was just the shaft.

all of the axles discussed in this thread are semi-floating rear axles-- unless you have a separate spindle and the housing supports the entire weight of the vehicle, you've got a semi-floating axle.
