Re: help

are they chewed up or broken looking

Re: help

Looks like maybe the bolt that holds the center pin in place in the differential. Look for physical damage in the gear set and then look at the center pin (you'll probably have to spin the differential). There should be a threaded hole at one side to hold it in place, if it's empty there's your issue. I have heard of those walking before.

Re: help

It's the bolt that holds the case halfs togeter on an ARB. THe D30 doesn't have a cross pin bolt, so that only leaves the ARB itself. Look at the bolts that hold it togeter, with the cover of spin the wheels and you should be able to see where it goes. There should be 8 or so total, check them all the are probably loose.

Ah, I somehow missed the description of the axle so took s tab in the dark ;)

Let me guess man, early D30 ARB? Those bolts walked out in those, in fact that did a whole lot to hurt ARBs reputation. The newer model D30 ARB case is better.

Get it in there and check the rest, also check them at every fluid change as losing those bolts can make things go kaboom!

Re: help

after looking futher there are 5 bolts that came out 3 broken heads, it looks like it is the bolts that hold the arb in. thank god i still the arb instrustions. can i pull the whole carrier out with out screwing anything up or is a big job ?

You can pull the carrier, fix the bolts, and get it all back in, just make sure not to mix up any shims and stuff.

It may be a pain to get back in the axle, if you absoluately cannot get it back in you can always press the U-Joints out of the axle shafts, put the stub shafts back in (to hold the unit bearings back together), then button the rest fo the axle up, put the cover on, and drive it to somebody that has a spreader.

Re: help

the shims in the d30 are behind the bearings, they won't come off. Make sure you mark the bearing caps (both for which side is which, and which side of each cap is up) and put them and the bolts back the same way they came off. Torque them back down to 60 ft/lbs when you put them back in.

I did a writeup on changing the seals in the d30 with lots of pics, you can follow the process to get the carrier out, the only thing different for you should be disconnecting the air line.

Hope that helps you at least see how it comes apart, if you were closer I'd come give you a hand. At the very least I would avoid driving it like that at all, you don't want the whole thing seizing up on you. You won't need to worry about the shims or the gear setup it will come out and go back in without any problems.

Re: help

if you can't get it out once the caps are off wedge a balled up rag into the gears so it will go towards the pinion when you roll the xj forward, put 2 bolts back in the cover to keep the carrier from falling out onto the ground, and roll the xj forward. the leverage will pop the carrier right out. Work lazier not harder :D
